Highlanders Close Out Strong Against Point Park,
74-63

The
Women’s Basketball team completed their road trip in Pennsylvania with a come
from behind victory over AMC North Division Opponent Point Park Pioneers today,
74-63. The Highlanders were led by Leah French
(Fr. Owego, NY) &
Becky Kallal (Jr. West
Chester, PA) who each scored 20 points.
The Pioneers entered the game looking for their
first win in AMC conference play and held a comfortable lead throughout the
majority of the game. The Highlanders had a tough time hitting shots in the
first half going 14-40, shooting 35%. Poor shooting combined with losing the
battle on the glass left Houghton with a 7 point deficit going into half time,
35-42.
The Highlanders needed leadership from their
upperclassmen in the second half and getting just that. Junior
Becky Kallal (Jr. West
Chester, PA) came out firing hitting four quick points to the bring them
within 3, 41-44 (16:13).
Cassie Merrill
(Jr. Houghton, NY)
tied the game with a 3 pointer 44-44 (13:49) as
the Highlanders continued to frustrate the Pioneers offense. The score stayed
close until

Scudder
(Jr. Fredonia, NY)
got fouled while laying the ball up hitting the shot and free throw to give
the Highlanders a 3 point lead, 55-52 (9:40). The women never looked back as the
freshman stepped up hitting shot after shot pushing the Highlanders lead to nine
points and closing out the game, 73-64.
The Highlanders had three players in double digits
tonight
Leah French
(Fr. Owego, NY) had 20 points off 7-21 FG, 4-9 3pt FG and grabbing 9
rebounds.
Becky Kallal (Jr. West
Chester, PA) has now put two strong performances together back-to-back
scoring 20 points from 7-15 FG and going 4-10 from behind the arch.
Ashley
Scudder
(Jr. Fredonia, NY)
scored 13 points, 7 rebounds and 3 assists.
The women
now stand at 3-1 in AMC North Division play and stand one game over .500 at 6-5 overall for the
season.
Next week is a big week for the Highlanders with three conference
double-headers. Starting on Tuesday January 9th for the women is; #18 NAIA Div 2
Nationally ranked Daemen College tip-off at 6:00 pm, Friday January 12th against
Myers University at 6:00 pm, and Saturday January 13th against #25 NAIA Div 2
Nationally ranked Notre Dame College at 2:00 pm.
