            Rebounds Lift Griffins Over Highlanders

Box Score

Houghton, N.Y. – Houghton, N.Y. – There was an emotional environment for the seniors in their last home game falling to Seton Hill University 65-70.  The game was close and the Highlanders had plenty of opportunities to win. However, Houghton could not hold on to the basketball for a chance to win the game.

Playing in his last home game Luke Mortenson (Sr. Greenville, NY) led the team with 17 points.  Mada Abdelhamid (Fr. Auckland, New Zealand) earned his third double-double of the season with 12 points, 11 rebounds.  Also playing in his last home game Corky McMullen (Sr. Castile, NY) earned 11 points and led the team with 4 assists and 2 steals.

“I’m proud of the way our team played. We battled hard and to the end despite the emotional atmosphere from honoring our seniors. What killed us tonight was not getting our offensive rebounds”, said Coach Zarges after the game.  This loss was disappointing, but not crushing as there is still hope for the Highlanders to make the playoffs. “A win in our next game could still put us there, so I’m not giving up,” Coach Zarges commented.

The leaders for the Griffins tonight were Marcus Thompson who had 21 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists, and 3 steals for the night and Igor Dutina who came off the bench to earn 13 points, 5 rebounds.

The Highlanders are now 9-14 overall and 1-7 in the AMC North Division. The men will look to improve both their records when they play away on Tuesday, February 13th at neighbor rival Daemen College with the tip-off at 7:30 PM.

Houghton College has deep and solid roots in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, where our teams use their commitment to excellence, both on the field-of-play and in the classroom, as a platform for their strong and unique emphasis on Sports Ministry. Their goal is to make a difference for the Kingdom on campus, in Allegany County, in the Northeast and around the world.  Houghton is one of only 13 institutions who have been hand-selected by the NAIA to serve as "Champions of Character" Program Centers, opening the door for Houghton to be a leader, both in the Northeast and nationally, in character education. Through hands-on, innovative community outreach initiatives, Houghton coaches and student-athletes are working together to change the culture of sport and to change our culture through sport.
