                Highlander Defense Shuts Out Griffins

Box Score

Houghton, NY The women’s basketball team quickly learned what was necessary to control Seton Hill’s offensive threat winning 61-55.  Learning from their previous season loss to Seton Hill Houghton was able to outscore Seton Hill in the second half by 11 points.

“Coming into the game we knew that Seton Hill was a team that likes to run the floor and play aggressively.  We wanted to make sure that we didn’t give them control of the game. We made a defensive adjustment in the second half to keep one person on their top player and we kept her to 5 points in the second half,” said Coach Lord who was pleased with yet another victory for the season.

Cassie Merrill (Jr. Houghton, NY) led the team with 12 points. Followed by her fellow Jr. Becky Kallal (West Chester, PA) and Fr. Leah French (Owego, NY) who earned 11 points a piece. Erika Forland (Fr. Huntington Station, NY) earned 10 points and led the team with 7 rebounds.

The leaders for Seton Hill this evening were Autumn Himes who had 16 points and Elena Radenkovic who followed just behind her with 15 points.

The Highlanders are now 12-11 overall and 6-6 in the AMC North Division. Houghton will look to improve both of their records when they play away against neighbor rival Daemen College on Tuesday, February 13th with the tip off at 5:30 PM.

Houghton College has deep and solid roots in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, where our teams use their commitment to excellence, both on the field-of-play and in the classroom, as a platform for their strong and unique emphasis on Sports Ministry. Their goal is to make a difference for the Kingdom on campus, in Allegany County, in the Northeast and around the world.  Houghton is one of only 13 institutions who have been hand-selected by the NAIA to serve as "Champions of Character" Program Centers, opening the door for Houghton to be a leader, both in the Northeast and nationally, in character education. Through hands-on, innovative community outreach initiatives, Houghton coaches and student-athletes are working together to change the culture of sport and to change our culture through sport.
