Highlanders Pick Up 6th Conference Win against Celtics

Box Score

Houghton, NY After a tough loss yesterday Houghton came in ready to play and defeated Carlow University 63-42.  The Highlanders are now 6-5 in the AMC North Division Conference and are more than likely playoff bound.  This win also brought an end to the athletic events held during Purple & Gold Week and left fans entertained and happy.

The Highlanders set out two team goals for their selves and were able to meet them. The Highlanders took great care of the ball today resulting in a season low 8 turnovers and also out rebounded Carlow by 7, giving them the edge in second chances points resulting in an easy win.

Captain Ashley Scudder (Jr. Fredonia, NY) once again stepped up to lead the Highlanders with 14 points. Jessica Smith (Fr. Middleport, NY) earned 10 points and 2 steals. And Erika Forland (Fr. Huntingdon Station, NY) led the team rebounding with 11 boards and 5 assists.

The leaders for Carlow this afternoon were Lukcic and Rowan who each earned 9 points a piece.

With the win tonight, Coach Lord and the rest of his team now have the playoffs on their minds.  “I was very pleased with our ability to bounce back after our disappointing loss yesterday and win today.  This win today was an important one as it will take some major upsets to knock us out of the playoffs now,” Coach Lord commented.

The Highlanders are now 11-10 overall and 6-5 in the AMC North Division. Houghton will look to improve both their records when they play at home on Friday, February 9th vs. Geneva College with the tip off at 8:00 PM.

Their goal is to make a difference for the Kingdom on campus, in Allegany County, in the Northeast and around the world.  Houghton is one of only 13 institutions who have been hand-selected by the NAIA to serve as "Champions of Character" Program Centers, opening the door for Houghton to be a leader, both in the Northeast and nationally, in character education. Through hands-on, innovative community outreach initiatives, Houghton coaches and student-athletes are working together to change the culture of sport and to change our culture through sport.
