ODU Beats Houghton
86-68
(Houghton,
N.Y.)—Once again a short period of inconsistent play cost the Houghton
College men a game. Friday night it was a six-minute stretch at the end
of the first half when visiting Ohio Dominican University outscored the
Highlanders 22-7 and turned a 22-22 tie into 44-29 halftime lead.
The Highlanders
closed to within 10 points with three minutes left, but the Panthers
drew away to win, 86-68.
“The biggest
problem we had tonight was we didn’t take care of the basketball,” said
Houghton Head Coach Brad Zarges. His team had 19 turnovers, 11 of them
in the first half and the majority of those during the Panthers’ run.
“It was another
disappointing loss.” Zarges said.
He did see a few
bright spots, however, citing the play of sophomore center Mada
Abdelhamid (pictured at right) and senior guard Jon VanSkiver.
Abdelhamid had 23
points to tie for the game high with ODU’s Donald Suel. VanSkiver hit
three of six three-point attempts for nine points. Yannick Anzuluni also
had 12 points and six rebounds for Houghton.
The Highlanders
(4-6) are back in action Saturday afternoon against the Mount Vernon
Nazarene Cougars, ranked seventh nationally in the NAIA Division II.
Tipoff is at 2 p.m.
