HOUGHTON, N.Y. — Four members of the Houghton College field hockey team have been honored for their academic performance by meeting the criteria for the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletes (NAIA) Scholar Athletes list.

The designation as a scholar-athlete is open only to juniors and seniors who have achieved and maintained a 3.5 or better grade point average.

From Houghton’s field hockey team, the following members were honored: Amanda Brenon, Kathleen Griego, Elizabeth Mueller and Ashley Pink. Highlander Field Hockey Head Coach Darlene Wells said: “These young women have done an outstanding job at balancing the priorities and demands of life. They have excelled physically, playing college field hockey; academically, in the classroom at Houghton College; socially, with their peers and teammates and spiritually, in dealing with the everyday stress and their walk with God. Today we are commending them for their achievements in academics and athletics.”

Brenon is a junior midfielder from Endwell, N.Y., where she attended Maine-Endwell High School. She is majoring in Inclusive Childhood Education. Brenon played an active role this season scoring four goals and co-led in assists with six. She was an all-tournament selection at the 2007 Houghton College Post Season Tournament.

Griego is a senior defender from Hunlock Creek, Pa., where she attended Northwest Area High School. Griego started all 20 matches, playing a pivotal role in anchoring the Highlanders’ defense. She is completing a degree in Biology.

Mueller is a senior sweeper from Lancaster, Pa., where she attended J.P. McCaskey High School. Mueller is a double major in Therapeutic Recreation and Psychology who recorded five goals and co-led the Highlanders with six assists. Mueller was named most valuable player in the 2007 Houghton College Post Season Tournament.

Pink is a senior defender from Greece, N.Y., where she attended Hilton High School. She recorded one goal and is completing a degree in Biology.

The Houghton College field hockey team finished 11-9 in 2007, and won the 2007 Post Season Tournament, defeating Wells College 6-0 in the final.

Houghton College has deep and solid roots in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, where our teams use their commitment to excellence, both on the field-of-play and in the classroom, as a platform for their strong and unique emphasis on Sports Ministry. Their goal is to make a difference for the Kingdom on campus, in Allegany County, in the Northeast and around the world.  Houghton is one of only 13 institutions who have been hand-selected by the NAIA to serve as "Champions of Character" Program Centers, opening the door for Houghton to be a leader, both in the Northeast and nationally, in character education. Through hands-on, innovative community outreach initiatives, Houghton coaches and student-athletes are working together to change the culture of sport and to change our culture through sport.
