Notre Dame Outlasts Houghton Women

(S. Euclid, Ohio)—The Notre Dame College Falcons stayed undefeated in American Mideast Conference (AMC) North Division play, pulling away from the Houghton College Highlanders to win 79-59 Saturday afternoon.

The Falcons stretched a two-point edge at the 10-minute mark of the first half to a 32-22 halftime lead. During the second half the Highlanders stayed closed, trailing just 60-48 with 5:47 left. The Falcons got the next seven points, though, to stretch their lead and put the game away.

“It was a case of running into a strong, experienced team,” said Skip Lord, head coach of the Highlanders, “We had way too many turnovers, plus they [Notre Dame] did a real good job on the boards.” The combination proved too much for Houghton.

Shannon Daugherty (left) was a bright spot for the Highlanders, leading the team with 11 points on five-for-nine shooting. Leah French added 10 points. Ashley Dupler had eight points and 10 rebounds.

The Falcons got 19 points from Amanda Brown, 18 from Ashley Carney and 17 from Molly Baker to stretch their record to 13-3 (4-0 in the AMC North).

Houghton—now 7-8 (0-3 in the AMC North)—faces another tough AMC North road game at rival Roberts Wesleyan on Tuesday at 5:30 before returning to the Nielsen Center to host Malone College next Saturday at 2 p.m.

Houghton College has deep and solid roots in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, where our teams use their commitment to excellence, both on the field-of-play and in the classroom, as a platform for their strong and unique emphasis on Sports Ministry. Their goal is to make a difference for the Kingdom on campus, in Allegany County, in the Northeast and around the world.  Houghton is one of only 13 institutions who have been hand-selected by the NAIA to serve as "Champions of Character" Program Centers, opening the door for Houghton to be a leader, both in the Northeast and nationally, in character education. Through hands-on, innovative community outreach initiatives, Houghton coaches and student-athletes are working together to change the culture of sport and to change our culture through sport.
