Track and Field Athletes Find Early Success at RIT Invitational

Rochester, NY- Houghton College’s women indoor track and field athletes won three events and finished second in three others at the R.I.T. Indoor Track and Field Invitational.

The women’s distance medley relay (DMR) team won its race with a time of 12:59.22, good enough to gain provisional qualification for the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) 2008 national indoor championship meet. The women’s DMR team consists of Heather Sayre (Wellsboro, PA/ Wellsboro High School), Naomi Christensen (Houghton, NY/ Houghton Academy), Darby Emerson (Windsor, CO/ Windsor) and Kaitlin Fadden (Hyde Park, NY/ FDR High School).

The afternoon included two more first-place finishes for the women’s team, with Christensen winning the 400m with a time of 27:07 and the women’s 4x400 relay team—Emerson, Kaitlin Smith (Woodhull, NY/ Jasper-Troupsburg), Carolynn Tomlinson (Victor, NY /Home School) and Lydia Parsons (Jamestown, NY/ Jamestown High School)—running a 4:17.72 to take first.

Smith finished second in the 500m, as well, running a 1:26.34 for the Highlanders. Emerson ran a 2:24.58 to finish second in the 800m. Sarah Whipple (Canandaigua, NY Marcus-Whitman) finished second in the 55m hurdles in 9.15.

The Highlanders’ men’s DMR team ran a 10:34.28, good enough for second place, and narrowly missed the qualifying time for the NAIA national meet (by 0.78 seconds).

The Houghton track and field team will compete next at the “Class of 32” Invitational at Cornell University on January 26.

Houghton College has deep and solid roots in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, where our teams use their commitment to excellence, both on the field-of-play and in the classroom, as a platform for their strong and unique emphasis on Sports Ministry. Their goal is to make a difference for the Kingdom on campus, in Allegany County, in the Northeast and around the world.  Houghton is one of only 13 institutions who have been hand-selected by the NAIA to serve as "Champions of Character" Program Centers, opening the door for Houghton to be a leader, both in the Northeast and nationally, in character education. Through hands-on, innovative community outreach initiatives, Houghton coaches and student-athletes are working together to change the culture of sport and to change our culture through sport.
