Raiders Down Highlander Women

(Rochester, N.Y.)—The Houghton College women’s basketball team fell to rival Roberts Wesleyan College 85-64 Tuesday night.

Turnovers hurt the Highlanders, starting with three in the first two minutes. Houghton had 14 turnovers in the first half as Roberts took a 39-27 halftime lead.

The second half was more of the same, as the Highlanders had four more turnovers in the first two minutes as Roberts built the lead to 20 (49-29). Houghton came back to cut the lead to 11 with 12 minutes left, but the Raiders gradually pulled away after that.

“We didn't do a very good job of taking care of the ball. Most of the other statistical areas ended up being fairly close.” said Highlander head coach Skip Lord, “We will be focusing on taking care of the ball and defending better as we prepare for this weekend.”

Houghton got a big scoring game from Ashley Dupler, who had 23, but the next highest-scoring Highlander was Ashley Scudder with nine.

Erin Farney had 23 for the Raiders and Jackie Murphy added 16. Erin Vess and Katie Lowell each had 14 for the Raiders as well. Vess had a game-high 10 rebounds.

Houghton, now 7-9 (0-4 in the AMC North), will host Malone College at the Nielsen Center on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m.

Houghton College has deep and solid roots in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, where our teams use their commitment to excellence, both on the field-of-play and in the classroom, as a platform for their strong and unique emphasis on Sports Ministry. Their goal is to make a difference for the Kingdom on campus, in Allegany County, in the Northeast and around the world.  Houghton is one of only 13 institutions who have been hand-selected by the NAIA to serve as "Champions of Character" Program Centers, opening the door for Houghton to be a leader, both in the Northeast and nationally, in character education. Through hands-on, innovative community outreach initiatives, Houghton coaches and student-athletes are working together to change the culture of sport and to change our culture through sport.
