Fadden Heading To Indoor Track & Field Nationals

Rochester, N.Y.—The Highlander Track & Field team secured their first national qualifier of the season when Kaitlin Fadden (Hyde Park, N.Y./FDR High School) (pictured at right) finished second in the 5000m with a time of 18:18.89, smashing a Houghton College record and punching her ticket to the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) indoor track & field championships in Johnson City, TN.

Naomi Castellani had held the women's 5000m record for over 15 years.

Another record that fell was the women's 4x400m relay. The 4x400m team of Darby Emerson (Windsor, Co./Windsor), Kaitlin Smith (Woodhull, N.Y./Jasper-Troupsburg), Carolynn Tomlinson (Victor, N.Y./Home School) and Lydia Parsons (Jamestown, N.Y./Jamestown High School) improved their time from the previous week, running a 4:08.63.

Overall, the women enjoyed a good afternoon of results. Sarah Whipple (Canandaigua, N.Y./Marcus-Whitman) won the 55m hurdles in 8.92, meeting the provisional qualification time for nationals.

Darby Emerson ran the 1000m in 3:06.48, winning her event and provisionally qualifying for nationals.

Naomi Christensen (Houghton, N.Y./Houghton Academy) won the women's 200m with a time of 26.80.

For the men's team, Dan Ballard (Syracuse, N.Y./Faith Heritage Academy) finished second in the 1000m with a time of 2:34.68.

Steve Scott (Gouverneur, N.Y./Gouverneur) finished fourth in the 400m with a time of 51:95, and Jacob Connor placed fourth in the 5000m with a time of 15:56.76.

The Houghton track and field team will compete next at the Cornell Open at Cornell University on February 9.

Houghton College has deep and solid roots in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, where our teams use their commitment to excellence, both on the field-of-play and in the classroom, as a platform for their strong and unique emphasis on Sports Ministry. Their goal is to make a difference for the Kingdom on campus, in Allegany County, in the Northeast and around the world.  Houghton is one of only 13 institutions who have been hand-selected by the NAIA to serve as "Champions of Character" Program Centers, opening the door for Houghton to be a leader, both in the Northeast and nationally, in character education. Through hands-on, innovative community outreach initiatives, Houghton coaches and student-athletes are working together to change the culture of sport and to change our culture through sport.
