Houghton Women Roll Past Pioneers

(Pittsburgh, Pa.)—The Houghton College women used a surprise full-court defense with about eight minutes left in the game to get three turnovers and build enough of a lead to hold off the Point Park Pioneers, 57-52 Friday night.

Point Park led the game 24-22 at the half. “We played a decent defensive game in the first half,” said Houghton Head Coach Skip Lord, “but they were better on the boards.”

Lord cited the effort of Marci Jonathan (pictured at right in action earlier this season), who came off the bench to score six points, going two-for-three from the field and two-for-two from the line, and add eight rebounds without a turnover. “Ashley Dupler was a little under the weather,” said Lord, “and Marci really was a presence.”

Dupler still managed to score 10 and take down nine rebounds, while Ashley Scudder had 11 and seven.

“Also key was Becky Kallal,” Lord said, “She hit three important three-pointers in a row in the second half.” Kallal finished with ten points.

The Highlanders move to 9-9 on the season and 2-4 in the American Mideast Conference’s (AMC’s) North Division. The women’s next game is Tuesday night at 6 p.m., when they host AMC North rival Roberts Wesleyan College at the Nielsen Center.

Houghton College has deep and solid roots in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, where our teams use their commitment to excellence, both on the field-of-play and in the classroom, as a platform for their strong and unique emphasis on Sports Ministry. Their goal is to make a difference for the Kingdom on campus, in Allegany County, in the Northeast and around the world.  Houghton is one of only 13 institutions who have been hand-selected by the NAIA to serve as "Champions of Character" Program Centers, opening the door for Houghton to be a leader, both in the Northeast and nationally, in character education. Through hands-on, innovative community outreach initiatives, Houghton coaches and student-athletes are working together to change the culture of sport and to change our culture through sport.
