Highlander Men Fall to Mount Vernon

(Mount
Vernon, Ohio)—White-hot shooting by the Mount Vernon Nazarene University
Cougars fueled them to a 94-54 win over the visiting Houghton Highlanders
Thursday night.
The Cougars shot
37-for-69 (57 percent) from the field, including 11-of-24 (46 percent)
from three-point range in the victory.
Jon Mannarino
(pictured at left
in action against Mount Vernon Nazarene earlier this year
at the Nielsen Center)
had one of the Highlanders’
better performances, scoring a team-high 14 points on six-of-11 shooting
and grabbing three rebounds. Yannick Anzuluni had 11 points and eight
rebounds while Mada Abdelhamid had nine points and 12 boards.
Ben Falkenberg
led the Cougars with 27 points. Falkenberg was 10-of-14 from the field,
including five-for-eight from beyond the arc; he also had four assists
and only one turnover. Three other Cougars were in double figures as
well.
Mount Vernon
shot 16-for-30 in the first half to lead 40-26 at the break, then
scorched the nets for 21-of-35 (60 percent) in the second half to pull
away.
The loss drops
Houghton’s record to 7-14. The Highlanders go on the road to Buffalo
State on Tuesday, February 12, for a 7 p.m. tip.
Houghton College
has deep
and
solid
roots in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, where our
teams use their commitment to excellence, both on the field-of-play
and
in the classroom, as a platform for their strong and
unique emphasis on Sports Ministry. Their goal is to make a difference
for the Kingdom
on campus, in Allegany County,
in the Northeast and
around
the world.
Houghton is one of only 13 institutions who have been hand-selected
by the NAIA to serve as "Champions of Character" Program Centers, opening the door
for Houghton to be a leader,
both in the Northeast and
nationally, in character education.
Through hands-on,
innovative community outreach initiatives, Houghton coaches and
student-athletes
are working together to change the culture of sport and
to change our culture through sport.
