                                            Highlanders Outbattle Celtics

(Houghton, N.Y.)—The Houghton College women’s basketball team jumped out to an early lead and coasted to a 77-52 victory over the Carlow Celtics Friday night at the Nielsen Center.

Houghton led by 18 (29-11) with 7:25 left in the first period, but Carlow cut the lead in half (38-29) by the break.

After halftime the Highlanders’ defense intensified, holding Carlow to just 5-29 shooting (17 percent), including a miserable 1-11 (9 percent) from beyond the three-point line. Houghton pulled away, pushing the lead to 15 after five minutes and then to 20 midway through the second half.

Leah French led the way for Houghton with 13, and had plenty of help from a balanced Highlander attack. Cassie Merrill scored 11 and Shannon Daugherty, her high school teammate from Houghton Academy, added 10. Kara Schrader and Ashley Dupler also had 10 apiece.

Dupler had a double-double, grabbing a game-high 11 rebounds. Marci Jonathan took down nine boards, as the Highlanders out-rebounded Carlow 52-34.

Jacqueline Muir had 17 points and six rebounds to lead the Celtics in both categories. Christina Costa was the only other Carlow player in double figures, with 14.

The win is the fifth straight for Houghton—all of them over American Mideast Conference North Division foes—which has raised its record to 12-9 overall and 5-4 in the conference. They play again Saturday night, hosting the Ursuline Arrows at the Nielsen Center at 7.

Houghton College has deep and solid roots in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, where our teams use their commitment to excellence, both on the field-of-play and in the classroom, as a platform for their strong and unique emphasis on Sports Ministry. Their goal is to make a difference for the Kingdom on campus, in Allegany County, in the Northeast and around the world.  Houghton is one of only 13 institutions who have been hand-selected by the NAIA to serve as "Champions of Character" Program Centers, opening the door for Houghton to be a leader, both in the Northeast and nationally, in character education. Through hands-on, innovative community outreach initiatives, Houghton coaches and student-athletes are working together to change the culture of sport and to change our culture through sport.
