                             Records Continue To Fall At The Cornell Open

Cornell, N.Y.- The Houghton Track & Field team competed this weekend at the Cornell Open. The Highlanders toppled three Houghton College school records and recorded several top-five finishes. The Cornell Open is considered one of the top events featuring over 25 schools in attendance.

 

Naomi Christensen (Houghton, NY/ Houghton Academy) broke the school record in the women’s 60m Dash with a time of 8.24. The previous mark was shared by Sarah Gardner and current senior, Sarah Whipple at 8.34.

 

Another record that fell was the women's 4x400m relay. Darby Emerson (Windsor, Co./Windsor), Kaitlin Smith (Woodhull, N.Y./Jasper-Troupsburg), Carolynn Tomlinson (Victor, N.Y./Home School) and Lydia Parsons (Jamestown, N.Y./Jamestown High School) finished in 2nd place and improved their time from the previous week, running a 4:08.19.


Darby Emerson finished 5th in the 800m running a 2:21.13, meeting the provisional qualification time for nationals.


Kaitlin Fadden (Hyde Park, N.Y./FDR High School) finished 2nd in the 5000m with a time of 18:30.32.


Naomi Christensen finished 5th in the 400m, improving her provisional qualification time with a 59.21.
 

Kaitlin Smith finished 3rd in the 500m with a time of 1:25.49.

 

The Men's team secured their first provisional qualifier of the year with Dan Ballard (Syracuse, N.Y./Faith Heritage Academy) finishing 5th in the Mile with a time of 4:23.16. Ballard also finished 2nd in the 1000m with a time of 2:35.50.

 

Steve Scott (Gouverneur, N.Y./Gouverneur) broke a Houghton College record, finishing 4th in the 400m with a time of 51.28.

Also, Jesse Braswell (Loudonville, OH/ Northwestern) became Houghton College's first ever athlete to compete in the heptathlon, his 2 day total was 3744 points.

The Houghton track and field team will compete next at the Kane Open at Cornell University on February 16.
