Highlander Women Take Early Lead, Win Seventh Straight

(Houghton, N.Y.)—
The Houghton College women’s basketball team jumped out to a 12-0 lead in the first 13 minutes and never trailed on their way to a 51-46 win over Point Park University at the Nielsen Center Friday night.

The victory was Houghton’s seventh straight, all against American Mideast Conference (AMC) North Division opponents.

Despite the early lead, it was no easy game for the Highlanders. They used strong defense to hold the Pioneers to 5-26 (19.2 percent) shooting in the first half on their way to a 27-15 lead at the break.

In the second half, the Pioneers came out on a 9-0 run to cut the lead to 3 (27-24). Houghton responded with a 10-3 run of their own to pump the lead back up to digits with 11:25 to go, then held on to win 51-46.

Point guard Lisa Skrypnik had a game-high 12 rebounds—seven of them offensive—to help the Highlanders to a 48-38 edge on the boards.

Ashley Dupler led all scorers with 22, grabbed seven rebounds and blocked four shots. Ashley Scudder had 12 points and five rebounds.

Brittney Wilson had 17 points and nine rebounds for the Point Park. Ashley Hays was the only other Pioneer in double figures, with 13.

The win boosts the Highlanders’ overall record to 14-9, 7-4 in the AMC North. Houghton plays again Saturday at 2 p.m., hosting Notre Dame College.

Houghton College has deep and solid roots in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, where our teams use their commitment to excellence, both on the field-of-play and in the classroom, as a platform for their strong and unique emphasis on Sports Ministry. Their goal is to make a difference for the Kingdom on campus, in Allegany County, in the Northeast and around the world.  Houghton is one of only 13 institutions who have been hand-selected by the NAIA to serve as "Champions of Character" Program Centers, opening the door for Houghton to be a leader, both in the Northeast and nationally, in character education. Through hands-on, innovative community outreach initiatives, Houghton coaches and student-athletes are working together to change the culture of sport and to change our culture through sport.
