Women’s Win Streak Snapped by Notre Dame

(Houghton, N.Y.)—The women’s basketball team had its seven-game winning streak snapped Saturday afternoon at the Nielsen Center, falling 73-59 to Notre Dame College.

The Falcons pulled away in the later stages of the first half, building a one-point lead after six minutes (14-13) into a 21-point bulge by the break (44-23). Turnovers hurt the Highlanders—they had 14 in the first stanza, compared to just seven for Notre Dame.

In the second half, Houghton chipped away at the Falcon’s lead, getting as close as 12 (69-57) with three minutes left, but couldn’t close the gap any more.

Ashley Dupler led the Highlanders, with game-highs in both points (23) and rebounds (11). Becky Kallal—one of the three seniors honored in a ceremony before the game—chipped in 13 points. Leah French was the only other Highlander in double figures, with 11.

The Falcons had a balanced scoring attack, with five players in double figures, led by Ashley Carney’s 16.

Before the game, Houghton honored three seniors who are the tri-captains of this year’s team: Cassie Merrill, Ashley Scudder (pictured at right with her parents) and Kallal.

The loss drops Houghton into fourth place in the American Mideast Conference (AMC) North Division with a 7-5 conference record. They are 14-11 overall. Their next game is Tuesday, February 19, at home against AMC North-leading Daemen College. Tip-off is at 6 p.m.

Houghton College has deep and solid roots in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, where our teams use their commitment to excellence, both on the field-of-play and in the classroom, as a platform for their strong and unique emphasis on Sports Ministry. Their goal is to make a difference for the Kingdom on campus, in Allegany County, in the Northeast and around the world.  Houghton is one of only 13 institutions who have been hand-selected by the NAIA to serve as "Champions of Character" Program Centers, opening the door for Houghton to be a leader, both in the Northeast and nationally, in character education. Through hands-on, innovative community outreach initiatives, Houghton coaches and student-athletes are working together to change the culture of sport and to change our culture through sport.
