Roberts Ousts Highlanders from AMC Playoffs

(Chili, N.Y.)—The Roberts Wesleyan women’s basketball team led from the very beginning and beat the Houghton Highlanders 72-53 in a first-round American Mideast Conference (AMC) playoff game Wednesday night.

Roberts hit a three-pointer right at the beginning and built a double-digit lead less than three minutes into the game. Houghton got within nine points (25-14) with 8:23 left in the first half, but that was as close as they would come. The Raiders led 39-25 at the half.

“We got behind early,” said Skip Lord, Houghton’s head coach. “They really lit it up in the first half, especially from three-point range.”

Roberts shot 7-12 (58 percent) from beyond the arc in the first half.

It took Houghton more than three minutes to get its first points of the second half, and by that point Roberts led by 19. The teams played evenly for the rest of the game, but it was too late for the Highlanders.

“The big difference was the rebounding, especially on the offensive end,” said Lord. Roberts out-rebounded Houghton 49-35, and had 18 offensive boards to Houghton’s nine.

Houghton got 14 points and 14 rebounds from Ashley Dupler, who also had three blocked shots and four steals. Leah French had a game-high 19 points, on 7-14 shooting, and had three steals as well.

Roberts got 18 points apiece from Jackie Murphy and Erin Farney, and 10 each from Jaslyn Lee and Aimee Kovinchick. Farney and Kovinchick had 12 and 10 rebounds, respectively, while Murphy pulled down nine.

The loss ends Houghton’s season, with a final record of 15-12.

Houghton College has deep and solid roots in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, where our teams use their commitment to excellence, both on the field-of-play and in the classroom, as a platform for their strong and unique emphasis on Sports Ministry. Their goal is to make a difference for the Kingdom on campus, in Allegany County, in the Northeast and around the world.  Houghton is one of only 13 institutions who have been hand-selected by the NAIA to serve as "Champions of Character" Program Centers, opening the door for Houghton to be a leader, both in the Northeast and nationally, in character education. Through hands-on, innovative community outreach initiatives, Houghton coaches and student-athletes are working together to change the culture of sport and to change our culture through sport.
