Men’s DMR Runs Into Finals; Women’s 4 X 400 Can’t Advance

(Johnson City, Tenn.)—The Houghton College men’s distance medley relay team ran a 10:14.79 in its preliminary heat Thursday night at the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics’ (NAIA) National Indoor Track and Field Championship Meet to grab the eighth and final qualifying spot for Saturday’s finals.

The team consists of Johnny Kimani, who ran the opening leg (1200M), Steve Scott (400M), Josiah Snelgrove (800M) and Dan Ballard (1600M, pictured at left). The team’s time improved the Houghton College record, which they set earlier this year, by almost 11 seconds. The finals are scheduled to start at 3:50 p.m. Saturday.

The women’s 4 X 400M relay team also ran in a preliminary race last night, but failed to qualify for the finals. Darby Emerson, Lydia Parsons, Kaitlin Smith and Naomi Christensen ran a 4:05.02 in their heat, which placed them 17th out of the 24 teams in the semis.

The Houghton athletes at the meet face a full slate of events today:

  • Rachel Rhodes and Chelsea Adams are in the women’s 3K race walk finals at 12:10 p.m.

  •  Zach Adams will compete in the men’s 3K race walk finals at 12:35 p.m.

  • Sarah Whipple will run in the 60M hurdles preliminaries at 1:00 p.m.

  • Dan Ballard runs in the mile semi-final at 2:20 p.m.

  • Naomi Christensen will run in the 600M semifinal at 3:20 p.m.

  • Darby Emerson is in the 800M semis at 4:10 p.m.

  • Kaitlin Fadden runs in the 3K semifinal at 5:10 p.m.

Houghton College has deep and solid roots in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, where our teams use their commitment to excellence, both on the field-of-play and in the classroom, as a platform for their strong and unique emphasis on Sports Ministry. Their goal is to make a difference for the Kingdom on campus, in Allegany County, in the Northeast and around the world.  Houghton is one of only 13 institutions who have been hand-selected by the NAIA to serve as "Champions of Character" Program Centers, opening the door for Houghton to be a leader, both in the Northeast and nationally, in character education. Through hands-on, innovative community outreach initiatives, Houghton coaches and student-athletes are working together to change the culture of sport and to change our culture through sport.
