College Adds Girl’s Soccer Team
Camp to Summer Schedule
(Houghton,
N.Y.)—Houghton College has announced the addition of a residential
camp for high school varsity-level girl’s soccer teams to its slate
of camps this summer on the Houghton campus.
Women’s
Soccer Coach David Lewis—the all-time leader in coaching victories
in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA)—will
lead the new camp, to be held from July 13-18. The camp will feature
technical/tactical training sessions and each team in attendance
will play full-field 11 v. 11 as well as small-sided 7 v. 7
match-play tournaments.
Lewis and his
staff have limited the camp attendance to the first eight teams to
register so that they can provide maximum attention for each team.
Each team is required to have a minimum of 16 players—there is no
maximum number. A team may invite “guest players” in order to reach
the minimum number of players required.
The cost per
camper is $330, which includes room and meals, as well as a soccer
ball, a camp T-shirt and professional instruction. Alternatively,
teams may choose to commute to the camp and pay just $200 per camper
(room and meals not included).
Coaches who
wish to accompany teams will receive free room and meals. If a coach
cannot accompany the team, the camp will provide a staff coach.
“Our camps
have grown significantly over the years—they now register over 400
campers per week,” said Lewis, “and a number of coaches have been
asking us to offer a soccer team camp, so we felt the time was right
to provide this new service.”
The soccer
camps this year will start with the new team camp, July 13-18, then
have two weeks of the traditional camps, week I on July 27–August 1
and week II on August 3-8. The traditional camps are for boys and
girls entering grades 4-12 and have attracted both individuals and
full teams.
