Mannarino Named to AMC North All-Freshman Team

(Houghton, N.Y.)—Jon Mannarino, starting point guard for the Houghton College men’s basketball team, has earned a spot on the American Mideast Conference, North Division’s All-Freshman team.

The 5’10” native of Solon, Ohio, who attended Walsh Jesuit High School, averaged 3.6 points and 4.26 assists per game. His 111 assists on the season were almost twice as many as the next Highlander.

“As a freshman, Jon started all but one game this season,” said Brad Zarges, head coach of the Houghton men’s team, “His poise at the point and steady improvement the second half of the season is evidence of how hard he has worked to get better each day.”

Mannarino was second on the team in steals, with 34, and fifth in rebounds, with 46. He joins sophomore teammates Mada Abdelhamid, Yannick Anzuluni and Ben Kopp in earning All-AMC honors.

“The beauty of these four players is that they will all come back together for at least two more years,” says Zarges, “with Jon having three more years left.”

The Highlanders went 7-19 overall this year, and were 0-10 in AMC North play.

Houghton College has deep and solid roots in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, where our teams use their commitment to excellence, both on the field-of-play and in the classroom, as a platform for their strong and unique emphasis on Sports Ministry. Their goal is to make a difference for the Kingdom on campus, in Allegany County, in the Northeast and around the world.  Houghton is one of only 13 institutions who have been hand-selected by the NAIA to serve as "Champions of Character" Program Centers, opening the door for Houghton to be a leader, both in the Northeast and nationally, in character education. Through hands-on, innovative community outreach initiatives, Houghton coaches and student-athletes are working together to change the culture of sport and to change our culture through sport.
