Fillmore’s Martin Signs to Play Soccer at Houghton

(Houghton, N.Y.)—Devon Martin, the leading scorer on the Fillmore Central School soccer team that went to the New York State Class D Final Four in 2007, has signed to play for Houghton College in 2008.

“I’m excited that we’ll be adding Devon Martin to the team,” said Highlander Head Coach Matthew Webb, “He’s a great student and a perfect fit for Houghton College and we expect that in the future he’ll be a contributor to our team and in our program.”

Martin had 26 goals and 30 assists in his career at Fillmore, earning First Team honors from Allegany County Division I, the Expressway Conference and the Big 30. He was the Section V Birdseye Player of the Week for September 25, 2007 and earned All-Greater Rochester honorable mention.

Martin also was a starter and leading contributor for the Fillmore basketball team, which just completed a run to the state quarterfinals.

“To have an athlete go on to college and be successful; it’s the ultimate satisfaction for a [high school] coach,” said James Mullen, coach of the Fillmore soccer and basketball teams, “I think even more so for me because I love Houghton College—it’s my alma mater. We’ve had several athletes go there in recent years: Cassandra Mills, Joanne Beardsley and, of course, Aaron Martin.”

Aaron is Devon’s brother, who graduated from Fillmore in the spring of 2007 and played soccer at Houghton in the fall. The two will be teammates next year for the Highlanders. They are the sons of Troy and Sue Martin of Houghton, N.Y., both of whom are employed by Houghton College. He is director of student financial services and she is assistant professor of education.

Houghton College has deep and solid roots in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, where our teams use their commitment to excellence, both on the field-of-play and in the classroom, as a platform for their strong and unique emphasis on Sports Ministry. Their goal is to make a difference for the Kingdom on campus, in Allegany County, in the Northeast and around the world.  Houghton is one of only 13 institutions who have been hand-selected by the NAIA to serve as "Champions of Character" Program Centers, opening the door for Houghton to be a leader, both in the Northeast and nationally, in character education. Through hands-on, innovative community outreach initiatives, Houghton coaches and student-athletes are working together to change the culture of sport and to change our culture through sport.
