Marcus Whitman Soccer Star Signs With Houghton

(Rushville, N.Y.)—Danielle Turner has signed a letter of intent to play soccer at Houghton College. A midfielder/forward from Gorham, N.Y., Turner helped Marcus Whitman win the league championship in 2006. She finished her high school career registering 46 goals and 33 assists for a total of 125 points.

Danielle attended the Houghton College soccer camps over the past two summers and was recognized as a camp All-Star both years. In 2007 she was awarded the Ideal Houghton College Player Award, an award recognizing the top player in camp.

According to Houghton Women’s Soccer Coach David Lewis, “Danielle is an impact player who will play a key role for us. She reads the game well, has great skills, and has experience playing at a high level.” Besides serving two years as her high school team’s captain, Turner has also been a member of the Rochester Junior Rhinos and the Canandaigua Attack soccer clubs.

During her high school campaign, Turner received numerous accolades including First Team League All-Star four times (2004-07) and All-Greater Rochester Honorable Mention twice (2006-07). In 2007 she was selected as a Daily Messenger All-Star and as an Exceptional Senior in the Finger Lakes Central Division.

“Besides quality soccer players, we are looking for quality people who are academically strong and who also desire to grow in their Christian faith,” asserts Lewis. “Danielle fits our team’s philosophy and I am happy to include her as a part of our program.”

Danielle is the daughter of Mike and Laurie Turner of Gorham, N.Y. She anticipates majoring in biology with a pre-medicine emphasis while studying at Houghton.

Houghton finished the 2007 season with a 13-3-3 record and won the American Mideast Conference, North Division (going 7-0-0 in the division). It was the team’s 14th conference or divisional title in the past 15 years. They advanced to the NAIA Regional Final Four for the 15th consecutive year, and captured the Region IX championship. They advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NAIA national tournament, held in Daytona Beach, Fla. It was the Highlanders’ fifth consecutive national tournament appearance.

Houghton College has deep and solid roots in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, where our teams use their commitment to excellence, both on the field-of-play and in the classroom, as a platform for their strong and unique emphasis on Sports Ministry. Their goal is to make a difference for the Kingdom on campus, in Allegany County, in the Northeast and around the world.  Houghton is one of only 13 institutions who have been hand-selected by the NAIA to serve as "Champions of Character" Program Centers, opening the door for Houghton to be a leader, both in the Northeast and nationally, in character education. Through hands-on, innovative community outreach initiatives, Houghton coaches and student-athletes are working together to change the culture of sport and to change our culture through sport.
