Arizona Standout Signs to Play Men's Soccer

(Houghton, N.Y.)—The Houghton College men’s soccer team has signed Arizona high school standout Stephen Bower to a letter of intent. “I am excited to add Steve Bower to our roster for next year,” said Matthew Webb, the Highlanders’ head coach, “He is a good two-way player who sees the field well and with added strength and experience should develop into a solid contributor for us.”

Bower has been a four-year varsity starter for Westview High School in Glendale, Ariz., tallying a team-high 10 goals and 23 assists from his central midfield position his senior year.

“Steve is a natural leader and hard worker and will be a perfect fit and addition given the culture of our team,” Webb said.

Bower was an All-Desert West Region First Team selection his junior and senior years, when he also served as the captain of his high school team. The team placed second in the region last fall, and qualified for the state tournament.

Bower’s club team finished in the top 10 of the Arizona State Premier League two of the last three years. He finished his prep career with 14 goals and 47 assists despite spending two of his four years as a sweeper.

“He is an excellent student and with his passion for Christ and his natural charismatic leadership already embodies much of what we strive for in our program,” said Webb, “We are very pleased that Steve has chosen to become a Highlander.”

Houghton went 9-4-5 last year, reaching the semifinals of the American Mideast Conference (AMC) playoffs before falling to AMC and NAIA Region IX winners Rio Grande, 3-0.

Houghton College has deep and solid roots in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, where our teams use their commitment to excellence, both on the field-of-play and in the classroom, as a platform for their strong and unique emphasis on Sports Ministry. Their goal is to make a difference for the Kingdom on campus, in Allegany County, in the Northeast and around the world.  Houghton is one of only 13 institutions who have been hand-selected by the NAIA to serve as "Champions of Character" Program Centers, opening the door for Houghton to be a leader, both in the Northeast and nationally, in character education. Through hands-on, innovative community outreach initiatives, Houghton coaches and student-athletes are working together to change the culture of sport and to change our culture through sport.
