East Aurora’s Zacchinga Signs with Highlanders
(Houghton,
N.Y.)— Steve
Zacchinga, a goalkeeper for East Aurora High School, has signed a letter
of intent to play for the Houghton College men’s soccer team in the
fall.
"Steve is going to be a great addition to our team,” said Matthew
Webb, the Highlanders’ head coach, “He’ll provide depth at our
goalkeeper position this year, and will definitely compete for a
starting role in the future.”
Zacchinga, the son of John and Audrey Zacchinga, was named to the
All-Western New York, Second Team last fall after leading East Aurora to
an undefeated regular season and posting 13 shutouts.
“Ever since seeing him at our camp last summer, I have had my eye
on Steve,” said Webb, “He has excellent hands. He is also a very hard
worker and is an excellent fit for both our soccer program and Houghton
College."
Zacchinga started in goal for East Aurora for four years,
compiling 24 shutouts.
The Highlanders finished the regular season 8-3-5 last fall, then
won a playoff game in the American Mideast Conference (AMC) before
falling in the conference semifinals to AMC and Region IX winners Rio
Grande and finishing with a 9-4-5 record.
Houghton College
has deep
and
solid
roots in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, where our
teams use their commitment to excellence, both on the field-of-play
and
in the classroom, as a platform for their strong and
unique emphasis on Sports Ministry. Their goal is to make a difference
for the Kingdom
on campus, in Allegany County,
in the Northeast and
around
the world.
Houghton is one of only 13 institutions who have been hand-selected
by the NAIA to serve as "Champions of Character" Program Centers, opening the door
for Houghton to be a leader,
both in the Northeast and
nationally, in character education.
Through hands-on,
innovative community outreach initiatives, Houghton coaches and
student-athletes
are working together to change the culture of sport and
to change our culture through sport.
