Carthage’s Weaver Signs with Highlanders
(Houghton,
N.Y.)—Mitchell Weaver, a three-time All-Star striker from
Carthage High School, has signed a letter of intent to play for
the Houghton College men’s soccer team in the fall.
“Mitch brings very good size and finishing ability to our
forward crew,” said Matthew Webb, head coach of the Highlanders,
“He is a strong physical forward who challenges well in the air
and will be a solid target player for us.”
Weaver was a Frontier League All-Star three times in high school
and earned that league’s Most Valuable Player Award as well. He
won his team’s MVP award three times.
Weaver scored 61 goals and added 27 assists in his high school
career, leading his team to the Frontier League championship
three times, the league playoff title twice and into the Section
III semifinals his junior year.
“I am extremely pleased that Mitch has chosen Houghton to
further his education and soccer career,” said Webb, “He is an
excellent fit for Houghton from an athletic, academic and
spiritual perspective. Mitch had a number of schools pursuing
him, which is an indication of his potential as a college
player.”
Weaver is the son of Marty and Maureen Weaver of Carthage, N.Y.
He played club soccer for Indian River United (2003-05), CNY
United (2006-07) and
Jefferson FC (2007-08).
He played in the Empire State Games in 2006 and 2007.
Houghton went 9-4-5 last year, reaching the semifinals of
the American Mideast Conference (AMC) playoffs before falling to
AMC and NAIA Region IX winners Rio Grande, 3-0.
