Carthage’s Weaver Signs with Highlanders

Mitch Weaver Sings with the Highlanders(Houghton, N.Y.)—Mitchell Weaver, a three-time All-Star striker from Carthage High School, has signed a letter of intent to play for the Houghton College men’s soccer team in the fall.

“Mitch brings very good size and finishing ability to our forward crew,” said Matthew Webb, head coach of the Highlanders, “He is a strong physical forward who challenges well in the air and will be a solid target player for us.”

Weaver was a Frontier League All-Star three times in high school and earned that league’s Most Valuable Player Award as well. He won his team’s MVP award three times.

Weaver scored 61 goals and added 27 assists in his high school career, leading his team to the Frontier League championship three times, the league playoff title twice and into the Section III semifinals his junior year.

“I am extremely pleased that Mitch has chosen Houghton to further his education and soccer career,” said Webb, “He is an excellent fit for Houghton from an athletic, academic and spiritual perspective. Mitch had a number of schools pursuing him, which is an indication of his potential as a college player.”

Weaver is the son of Marty and Maureen Weaver of Carthage, N.Y. He played club soccer for Indian River United (2003-05), CNY United (2006-07) and Jefferson FC (2007-08). He played in the Empire State Games in 2006 and 2007.

Houghton went 9-4-5 last year, reaching the semifinals of the American Mideast Conference (AMC) playoffs before falling to AMC and NAIA Region IX winners Rio Grande, 3-0.

Houghton College has deep and solid roots in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, where our teams use their commitment to excellence, both on the field-of-play and in the classroom, as a platform for their strong and unique emphasis on Sports Ministry. Their goal is to make a difference for the Kingdom on campus, in Allegany County, in the Northeast and around the world.  Houghton is one of only 13 institutions who have been hand-selected by the NAIA to serve as "Champions of Character" Program Centers, opening the door for Houghton to be a leader, both in the Northeast and nationally, in character education. Through hands-on, innovative community outreach initiatives, Houghton coaches and student-athletes are working together to change the culture of sport and to change our culture through sport.
