Marhefka to Join Highlanders’ Women’s Hoops

Marhefka signs(Houghton, N.Y.)—Houghton College has signed Alicia Marhefka, a 5-11 forward from Apalachin, N.Y., to play women’s basketball next year.

Marhefka averaged 15.8 points and 10.8 rebounds per game last year at Owego Free Academy. She is second on the school’s all-time list for rebounds, with 678.

“We are very excited to have a player of Alicia's caliber join our program,” said H. “Skip” Lord, head coach of the Highlanders’ women’s team, “In addition to being an outstanding player, she is a well-rounded person of character. She excels in the classroom and is respected by friends and teachers. She will be a great fit for Houghton College and for our team.”

Marhefka earned a spot on the Southern Tier Athletic Conference All-League team and the All-Metro Team (Elmira, Ithaca, Binghamton and Oneonta area) in 2008. The previous year she was named to the Southern Tier Athletic Conference All-Central Division team.

At Owego Free Academy, Marhefka had 70 assists in her senior year while playing forward and had 217 in her career, third on the school’s all-time list. “She has a well-rounded game and is a very unselfish player,” says Lord, “She derives as much satisfaction from a good pass as she does from a made basket."

Marhefka, the daughter of Richard and Patricia Marhefka, plans to major in Psychology and Sociology at Houghton.

The Highlanders enjoyed a 15-12 overall season record and advanced to the quarterfinals of the American Mideast Conference tournament in 2007-08.

Houghton College has deep and solid roots in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, where our teams use their commitment to excellence, both on the field-of-play and in the classroom, as a platform for their strong and unique emphasis on Sports Ministry. Their goal is to make a difference for the Kingdom on campus, in Allegany County, in the Northeast and around the world.  Houghton is one of only 13 institutions who have been hand-selected by the NAIA to serve as "Champions of Character" Program Centers, opening the door for Houghton to be a leader, both in the Northeast and nationally, in character education. Through hands-on, innovative community outreach initiatives, Houghton coaches and student-athletes are working together to change the culture of sport and to change our culture through sport.
