Warren Native York Signs with Houghton Women’s Hoops

York Signs (Houghton, N.Y.)—Kaylyn York—a guard for Section VI, Class C champion Frewsburg Central School—has signed a letter of intent to play women’s basketball at Houghton College next year.

York averaged 13.1 points and 2.8 assists per game last year, earning CCIAC Division II All-Star First Team honors for the third consecutive year. Frewsburg went 21-3 (13-1 in the league) and won the Division II league championship.

“We are excited to have Kay joining our program,” said H. “Skip” Lord, Houghton’s head coach, “She has been a leader in a well-coached winning program.”

York leaves Frewsburg with a pocketful of school records. She is first in total assists in a career—177 in 63 games (2.8 average)—and set marks in free-throw and three-point field goal shooting accuracy. She also holds the single-game scoring record of 34.

“She has a great understanding of the game, sees the floor well and makes those around her better,” added Lord, “She knows what it means to work hard on the court and in the classroom. There is no question that Kay is the kind of person spiritually and socially that we want associated with our program as well.”

York is the daughter of Jeff and Kim York of Warren, Pa. She intends to major in adolescent education at Houghton.

The Highlanders enjoyed a 15-12 overall season record and advanced to the quarterfinals of the American Mideast Conference tournament in 2007-08.

Houghton College has deep and solid roots in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, where our teams use their commitment to excellence, both on the field-of-play and in the classroom, as a platform for their strong and unique emphasis on Sports Ministry. Their goal is to make a difference for the Kingdom on campus, in Allegany County, in the Northeast and around the world.  Houghton is one of only 13 institutions who have been hand-selected by the NAIA to serve as "Champions of Character" Program Centers, opening the door for Houghton to be a leader, both in the Northeast and nationally, in character education. Through hands-on, innovative community outreach initiatives, Houghton coaches and student-athletes are working together to change the culture of sport and to change our culture through sport.
