Track and Field Athletes Set 13 PRs at Slippery Rock
(Slippery Rock, Pa.)—The Houghton College track and field teams set 13
personal records (PRs) competing on a cold, windy day at Slippery Rock
State University’s Invitational over the weekend.
Competing just days after hosting their own invitational meet,
the Highlanders failed to set any school records or qualify any athletes
for the national meet for the first time this outdoor season. “Between
the weather and the long wait times for events, it was not a good day
for strong performances,” said Highlander Head Coach Bob Smalley.
Several Houghton athletes still managed to put up personal marks,
though. In the 800M men’s race, three Highlanders all recorded PRs—Jesse
McConnell, with a 1:59.44; Andrew Brubaker with a 2:14.05 and Steven
Roes, who ran a 2:16.62.
In the women’s javelin, Angela Smalley set a PR of 80-3.75.
Robert Howells set three PRs: in shot put, discus and javelin.
The Highlanders’ next
competition is at the American Mideast Conference championship meet, to
be held April 18-19 at Malone College in North Canton, Ohio.
Houghton College
has deep
and
solid
roots in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, where our
teams use their commitment to excellence, both on the field-of-play
and
in the classroom, as a platform for their strong and
unique emphasis on Sports Ministry. Their goal is to make a difference
for the Kingdom
on campus, in Allegany County,
in the Northeast and
around
the world.
Houghton is one of only 13 institutions who have been hand-selected
by the NAIA to serve as "Champions of Character" Program Centers, opening the door
for Houghton to be a leader,
both in the Northeast and
nationally, in character education.
Through hands-on,
innovative community outreach initiatives, Houghton coaches and
student-athletes
are working together to change the culture of sport and
to change our culture through sport.
