Thayer Signs to Play Women’s Soccer at Houghton
(Houghton,
N.Y.)—Alexa Thayer, a goalkeeper from Syracuse, N.Y., has signed
a letter of intent to play women’s soccer at Houghton College
this fall.
Thayer backstopped Faith Heritage School to a section
title in her freshman year. She is a three-time all-league
selection and was named to the All-Section First Team in 2007.
“Alexa demonstrates a strong work ethic, a great attitude
and a willingness to learn,” said David Lewis, head coach of the
Highlanders, “She is very good in a one-on-one situation.
I am looking forward to her development as a college
goalkeeper.”
Thayer, the daughter of Brenda and Roger Thayer, played
club soccer for the Salt City Scorch. She intends to major in
elementary education at Houghton.
Lewis’ Highlanders went
13-3-3 overall record and 7-0-0 in the American Mideast
Conference (AMC) in 2007. They won the AMC North title—their 14th
conference/divisional title over the past 15 years—and competed
in their 15th consecutive Region Final Four, taking
the Region IX championship. They advanced to the Sweet 16 at the
NAIA national tournament in Daytona Beach, Fla., their fifth
consecutive national tournament appearance.
Houghton College
has deep
and
solid
roots in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, where our
teams use their commitment to excellence, both on the field-of-play
and
in the classroom, as a platform for their strong and
unique emphasis on Sports Ministry. Their goal is to make a difference
for the Kingdom
on campus, in Allegany County,
in the Northeast and
around
the world.
Houghton is one of only 13 institutions who have been hand-selected
by the NAIA to serve as "Champions of Character" Program Centers, opening the door
for Houghton to be a leader,
both in the Northeast and
nationally, in character education.
Through hands-on,
innovative community outreach initiatives, Houghton coaches and
student-athletes
are working together to change the culture of sport and
to change our culture through sport.
