Bolivar-Richburg’s Emery Signs to Play Women’s Soccer at
Houghton
(Houghton,
N.Y.)—Angela Emery, a midfielder who played for
Bolivar-Richburg, has signed a letter of intent with the
Houghton College women’s soccer team.
Emery won the Most Valuable Player award in Allegany
County Division I the last two years and was a Division I
All-Star (First Team) four times. She was team captain for the
Bolivar-Richburg team that won both the Expressway Conference
and the Allegany County Division I titles in both 2006 and 2007.
“It has been a joy for me to coach Angela for the past
four seasons,” says her high school coach—and father—Mark Emery,
“She is one of those players that truly ‘gives it her all’ on
the field, in both games and practice. This determination is
also mirrored in the classroom, where she has taken the most
demanding academic schedule available for our students and done
extremely well.”
That’s not just a proud father talking, either. Emery
earned the New York State Scholar-Athlete Award four times in
her high school career and was voted president of her class
twice. At Houghton she intends to major in English and pursue a
career in law.
“Angela has been a part of our summer soccer camps every
year since she was in elementary school,” said David Lewis, head
coach of the Houghton College women’s soccer team, “I have
watched her development as a player and she reads the game well
and possesses a great touch on the ball.
She fits our team mission and I’m delighted to have her
as a part of our campus community and soccer program.”
Emery had 32 goals and 42 assists in her high school
career, including 17 assists in the 2006 season—a single-season
record at Bolivar-Richburg. She is second on the school’s
all-time list in both assists and career points (108). She also
played club soccer for the Southern Tier United Sting.
The Houghton women finished the 2007 season with a 13-3-3 record
and won the American Mideast Conference, North Division (going
7-0-0 in the division). It was the team’s 14th conference or
divisional title in the past 15 years. They advanced to the NAIA
Regional Final Four for the 15th consecutive year,
and captured the Region IX championship. They advanced to the
Sweet 16 of the NAIA national tournament, held in Daytona Beach,
Fla. It was the Highlanders’ fifth consecutive national
tournament appearance.
