Player of the Year Button Signs with Houghton
(Houghton,
N.Y.)—Kaylyn Button, the Big 30 Co-Player of the Year in 2007,
has signed a letter of intent to play for the Houghton College
women’s soccer team in the fall. Button piled up 78 goals and 56
assists in her career with Portville Central School, despite
missing most of her junior year with a broken collarbone.
“Kaylyn loves the game and is a dedicated worker,” said
David Lewis, head coach at Houghton, “She has good skills and
plays tough. She attended our soccer camp and her play impressed
me. She has consistently made it clear that she wanted to be a
part of our program. I’m glad that it has worked out for her and
our team.”
Button was captain of last year’s Portville team that
ended in a three-way tie for the Expressway Conference
championship. In her freshman and sophomore years the team went
undefeated and won that crown, also taking the Section VI, Class
C title both years.
Three times Button led the team in scoring. In her senior
year, she was a Big 30 All-Star, First Team, and also made the
Expressway Conference First Team. She also played club soccer
with the Southern Tier United Sting.
Button is the daughter of Dennis and Lori Button of Portville.
She intends to enter a pre-physical therapy program of studies
at Houghton.
The Houghton women’s team finished the 2007 season with a
13-3-3 record and won the American Mideast Conference, North
Division (going 7-0-0 in the division). It was the team’s 14th
conference or divisional title in the past 15 years. They
advanced to the NAIA Regional Final Four for the 15th
consecutive year, and captured the Region IX championship. They
advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NAIA national tournament, held
in Daytona Beach, Fla. It was the Highlanders’ fifth consecutive
national tournament appearance.
