Springer to Play for Highlanders Men’s Soccer

Springer signs(Houghton, N.Y.)—The Houghton College men’s soccer team has signed Brenden Springer from Burlington, Ontario, to a letter of intent for the fall. Springer is an all-around athlete from Académie Catholique Mère Teresa.

"Brenden is an excellent addition to our squad,” said Houghton Head Coach Matthew Webb, “He is a very composed and intelligent player and has received excellent instruction and teaching in his soccer academy. We are returning a number of strong players from our squad from last year, but I anticipate that Brenden will immediately challenge for time on the field.”springer at club

In addition to his high school play, Springer was active on club teams, most recently for DP Soccer Academy (pictured at right, with DP coach Paul Ferguson) and previously for Burlington Youth Soccer and Hamilton Sparta.

A local Canadian newspaper reported that Springer first became interested in the Highlanders when a classmate from Académie Catholique Mère Teresa visited Houghton as a basketball recruit. The classmate, Kenan Etale, is expected to sign with the Highlanders’ basketball team soon.

Springer chose Houghton over several other American colleges that showed interest partly because of its academic reputation.” In addition to his ability on the field, Brenden is a strong student and a young man of character,” said Webb, “I am extremely pleased that he has selected to continue his education and soccer career at Houghton.”

The son of Brian and Jacqueline Springer (pictured with Brenden and Coach Webb, above left), Brenden has expressed an interest in pursuing sports medicine or teaching in his studies.

Houghton went 9-4-5 last year, reaching the semifinals of the American Mideast Conference (AMC) playoffs before falling to AMC and NAIA Region IX winners Rio Grande.

Houghton College has deep and solid roots in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, where our teams use their commitment to excellence, both on the field-of-play and in the classroom, as a platform for their strong and unique emphasis on Sports Ministry. Their goal is to make a difference for the Kingdom on campus, in Allegany County, in the Northeast and around the world.  Houghton is one of only 13 institutions who have been hand-selected by the NAIA to serve as "Champions of Character" Program Centers, opening the door for Houghton to be a leader, both in the Northeast and nationally, in character education. Through hands-on, innovative community outreach initiatives, Houghton coaches and student-athletes are working together to change the culture of sport and to change our culture through sport.
