Highlanders to Host Two Weeks of Basketball Camp
(Houghton,
N.Y.)—Houghton College will host two weeks of basketball camp
this summer, with over 800 campers from 32 states and six
countries expected to attend. The Highlanders camps are the
largest residential, instructional camps in the northeast.
The girls’ camp will run June 29-July 4, with the boys’
camp following on July 6-11. “Building for the Future,” a
special day camp for boys and girls entering first through third
grades, runs July 7-10.
“In 11 years of
camp, we have had the chance to meet, teach and minister to over
3,000 campers,” says Brad Zarges, co-director of the camps, and
head coach of the Houghton men’s basketball team.
The “minister to” part is in line with the camps’ mission
statement, which stresses providing
both quality,
professional instruction
and “exposure to the Christian life.” The mission statement
also calls for “individual attention and maximum participation
at an affordable price.”
The camps deliver on that promise by limiting teams to
just eight players each and then scheduling three full games for
every team each day. Also, the camps run from Sunday through
Friday, providing plenty of time for instruction.
“This is a camp where we strive to teach the whole
person,” says H. “Skip” Lord, who co-directs the camps and is
the head coach of Houghton’s women’s basketball team,
“Excellence is modeled, taught and expected in every area of
life. Whether campers are reflecting on the bigger spiritual
issues of life, working hard to develop their game or building
lifelong friendships, Houghton College basketball camps are the
place to be for the serious athlete.”
