Highlanders’ Volleyball Camp Starts Sunday

vbcamp(Houghton, N.Y.)—The Houghton College volleyball camp starts play for boys and girls on Sunday afternoon, July 13, at the Houghton campus. the camp is open to day or resident campers entering fourth through 12th grades.

“Our goal is to motivate the skilled player, while teaching the beginner the basics needed to build a strong foundation,” says Nancy Cole, the Highlanders’ head coach and director of the camp. “We cover all aspects of the game on both an individual and a team level. Previous experience is not necessary.” Cole has been running the camp for 12 years.

She says the camp offers plenty of six-on-six competition, including a double-elimination tournament, plus a wally-ball tournament, skills work, team instruction, jump training and conditioning drills.

“We spend time developing the person as well as the athlete,” Cole says, noting that campers receive rewards for displaying the core values of the Champions of Character program, which is part of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). Houghton is one of the 13 original NAIA Champions of Character program centers.

“Each day we hand out a T-shirt to one person from each age group who displays the core character value for that day,” says Cole. “We hand out five shirts to each league—one each for respect, responsibility, integrity, sportsmanship and servant leadership.”

Cole says that the camp also has initiative games and takes time for swimming and fun. “The camp provides a healthy and wholesome atmosphere to enjoy playing volleyball and developing friendships,” she says.

Those interested can contact the Houghton College athletics department at 567-9645 for details on registering for the camp.

Houghton College has deep and solid roots in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, where our teams use their commitment to excellence, both on the field-of-play and in the classroom, as a platform for their strong and unique emphasis on Sports Ministry. Their goal is to make a difference for the Kingdom on campus, in Allegany County, in the Northeast and around the world.  Houghton is one of only 13 institutions who have been hand-selected by the NAIA to serve as "Champions of Character" Program Centers, opening the door for Houghton to be a leader, both in the Northeast and nationally, in character education. Through hands-on, innovative community outreach initiatives, Houghton coaches and student-athletes are working together to change the culture of sport and to change our culture through sport.
