Endwell’s Brenon Signs with Houghton

Brenon signs(Houghton, N.Y.)—Houghton College has signed Danielle Brenon, a four-time all-conference and all-district selection in both track and field and cross country at Maine-Endwell High School in Endwell, N.Y., to a letter of intent to run for the Highlanders next year.

“Her high school coach used nothing but superlatives to describe Danielle as a person, student and athlete,” said Bob Smalley, head coach of both the Highlander cross country and track and field teams, “I have every reason to believe that her coach was right. Danielle should have an illustrious career as a Houghton College distance runner.”

Brenon was an individual qualifier for the state cross country meet all four years of her high school career, and she qualified for the state meet at 800M in track, too. The Maine-Endwell cross country team won the Section IV title twice during her high school years.

“She will be an immediate impact runner for us,” said Smalley, “My expectation is that she will be in our women’s cross country team’s top five.”

Smalley also expects great things from Brenon during track and field season. “In high school she was a key member of an outstanding 4 X 800 relay team,” he said, “She will most likely become a key member of our collegiate 4 X 800 team, which looks to be the best in Houghton College history.”

Brenon, who earned honors as a WBNG-TV Southern Tier Academic All-Star her senior year, intends to major in communications and political science at Houghton. She is the daughter of James and Theresa Brenon of Endwell and the sister of Amanda Brenon, who will be a senior on the Highlanders’ field hockey team this fall.

Houghton College has deep and solid roots in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, where our teams use their commitment to excellence, both on the field-of-play and in the classroom, as a platform for their strong and unique emphasis on Sports Ministry. Their goal is to make a difference for the Kingdom on campus, in Allegany County, in the Northeast and around the world.  Houghton is one of only 13 institutions who have been hand-selected by the NAIA to serve as "Champions of Character" Program Centers, opening the door for Houghton to be a leader, both in the Northeast and nationally, in character education. Through hands-on, innovative community outreach initiatives, Houghton coaches and student-athletes are working together to change the culture of sport and to change our culture through sport.
