Swift Gives Houghton Women First Win

(Grand Rapids, Mich.)—A goal from senior Hannah Swift in the 70th minute gave the Houghton College women’s soccer team its first win of the season, 1-0, over Cornerstone University Wednesday afternoon.

The goal was the difference in an evenly played game in which each side recorded 11 shots—each had four in the first half and seven in the second. Both goalkeepers recorded five saves as well.

“It was pretty even,” said David Lewis, Houghton’s head coach, “a lot of the play was in the midfield.”

Swift made the difference, taking the ball to the end line, then pulling it back just inside the six yard line and slipping it past the keeper to score the game’s lone goal, and her first of the year.

The win evens Houghton’s record at 1-1; Cornerstone is 0-1. The Highlanders lost Tuesday afternoon by an identical 1-0 score.

The team has its first American Mideast Conference game on Saturday at Ursuline College in Pepper Pike, Ohio. Kickoff is at 2 p.m.

Houghton College has deep and solid roots in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, where our teams use their commitment to excellence, both on the field-of-play and in the classroom, as a platform for their strong and unique emphasis on Sports Ministry. Their goal is to make a difference for the Kingdom on campus, in Allegany County, in the Northeast and around the world.  Houghton is one of only 13 institutions who have been hand-selected by the NAIA to serve as "Champions of Character" Program Centers, opening the door for Houghton to be a leader, both in the Northeast and nationally, in character education. Through hands-on, innovative community outreach initiatives, Houghton coaches and student-athletes are working together to change the culture of sport and to change our culture through sport.
