 Field Hockey Blanked Again

(Houghton, N.Y.)—For the second time in as many days the Houghton College field hockey team was shut out by a nationally ranked opponent. Saturday afternoon it was SUNY Cortland blanking the Highlanders 7-0.

The Red Dragons came into the game ranked eighth in the nation in NCAA, Division III polls after finishing last year 17-4 and reaching the second round of the national tournament.

“The girls played with a lot of heart,” said Rachael Allison, Houghton’s head coach, “They had two difficult games, back-to-back, but I think it will prepare us for the rest of the season.”

On Friday afternoon the Highlanders took on the #1 ranked Bloomsburg University Huskies, losing 6-0.

It didn’t take long for the Red Dragons to find the net. Kayla Chambers scored in the fifth minute, taking a cross from the right side and rifling a shot past Houghton keeper Ashley Farr. Sam Spehler scored on an assist from Christine McCabe ten minutes later. Less than two minutes after that Brenda Semit scored for Cortland.

The Highlanders held the Dragons off the board for the remaining 19 minutes of the first half and the first 10:30 of the second half as well, showing some strong defense and flashes of offensive play.

“It was a very challenging game,” said Allison, “especially coming off yesterday, I know some of the girls were tired.”

Perhaps some of that showed in the remainder of the second half as the Highlanders gave up four more goals. Chambers had her second and third of the day, while Danielle Hand and Katie Johnson each added one.

Houghton (0-2) travels to SUNY Oswego for its next game, Wednesday, September 3, at 4 p.m.

Houghton College has deep and solid roots in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, where our teams use their commitment to excellence, both on the field-of-play and in the classroom, as a platform for their strong and unique emphasis on Sports Ministry. Their goal is to make a difference for the Kingdom on campus, in Allegany County, in the Northeast and around the world.  Houghton is one of only 13 institutions who have been hand-selected by the NAIA to serve as "Champions of Character" Program Centers, opening the door for Houghton to be a leader, both in the Northeast and nationally, in character education. Through hands-on, innovative community outreach initiatives, Houghton coaches and student-athletes are working together to change the culture of sport and to change our culture through sport.
