Highlander Women’s Soccer Team Shuts Out Ursuline

(Pepper Pike, Ohio)—The Houghton College women’s soccer team scored early, late and several times in between to blank Ursuline College on Saturday afternoon, 6-0.

“We had it right from the get-go,” acknowledged David Lewis, Houghton’s head coach.

Senior Bethany Kowalczyk (right) opened the scoring seven minutes into the game on an assist from Mandy Lewandowski. Just one minute later it was Hannah Swift getting her second goal of the year on a penalty kick and the Highlanders led 2-0.

In the 17th minute, Kowalczyk returned the favor, setting up Lewandowski for her first goal of the year, and ending the first-half scoring.

In the second half, Lewandowski fed sophomore Kaylin Bull for a goal in the 69th minute. Kowalczyk got her second of the game just three minutes later to make it 5-0. Freshman Stephanie Cleaves closed out the scoring in the 89th minute on an assist from sophomore transfer Nicole Gabree.

“It was nice to generate some attack,” said Lewis, whose team had scored just one goal in its first two games combined. “It was also good to spread around the scoring,” he added.

Erin Asquith played the first 75 minutes in goal for Houghton and Alexa Thayer took over for the final 15. Neither had to make a save in earning a shutout.

Houghton outshot Ursuline 15-3 and had a 4-2 edge in corner kicks.

Houghton, now 2-1, will host Hannibal LaGrange College on Saturday night, September 6, at 5 pm.

Houghton College has deep and solid roots in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, where our teams use their commitment to excellence, both on the field-of-play and in the classroom, as a platform for their strong and unique emphasis on Sports Ministry. Their goal is to make a difference for the Kingdom on campus, in Allegany County, in the Northeast and around the world.  Houghton is one of only 13 institutions who have been hand-selected by the NAIA to serve as "Champions of Character" Program Centers, opening the door for Houghton to be a leader, both in the Northeast and nationally, in character education. Through hands-on, innovative community outreach initiatives, Houghton coaches and student-athletes are working together to change the culture of sport and to change our culture through sport.
