Hoffman and Huyett Lead Highlanders Field Hockey to First Win

HuyettHoffman(Oswego, N.Y.)—Ashley Hoffman (#11, at right) and Jenny Huyett (#14) combined for five goals and four assists as the Houghton College field hockey team won for the first time this season, 6-2, over SUNY Oswego Wednesday afternoon.

“The team really played well together,” said Rachael Allison, the Highlanders’ head coach, “we’ve been working on give-and-go passing in practice and they really made it work in the game today.”

Hoffman, a junior forward from Webster, N.Y., and Jenny Huyett, a sophomore forward from Stevens, Pa., worked especially well together. Huyett assisted on three goals by Hoffman and Hoffman assisted on a goal by Huyett.

The Highlanders scored three times in the first half—two by Hoffman sandwiched around a penalty stroke converted by senior midfielder Amanda Brenon—to take a 3-0 halftime lead.

Jenny Quinn scored less than two minutes into the second half to edge the Lakers closer, but the Highlanders came right back with Hoffman’s third goal less than two minutes later to make it 4-1.

Huyett scored in the 50th minute to stretch the lead to 5-1. Oswego got a goal from Eileen O’Neill to make it 5-2 in the 56th minute. Hoffman got the final tally with just over five minutes left.

The win spoiled Oswego’s season opener and moved the Highlanders to 1-2. Houghton hosts Ramapo College next, on Saturday at 3 pm.

Houghton College has deep and solid roots in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, where our teams use their commitment to excellence, both on the field-of-play and in the classroom, as a platform for their strong and unique emphasis on Sports Ministry. Their goal is to make a difference for the Kingdom on campus, in Allegany County, in the Northeast and around the world.  Houghton is one of only 13 institutions who have been hand-selected by the NAIA to serve as "Champions of Character" Program Centers, opening the door for Houghton to be a leader, both in the Northeast and nationally, in character education. Through hands-on, innovative community outreach initiatives, Houghton coaches and student-athletes are working together to change the culture of sport and to change our culture through sport.
