Volleyball Team Ends Tourney with Win

Darby Emerson(Houghton, N.Y.)—For the second straight day the Houghton College volleyball team split a pair of matches at the Houghton Invitational Tournament, losing to Trinity Christian 3-0 Saturday morning, then bouncing back to beat Marian College 3-0 in the afternoon.

“It was a pretty rough game for us,” said Highlander Head Coach Nancy Cole of the morning match, “we looked green and played that way. Plus, Trinity Christian is a good team.”

Holly Motheral had nine kills and 12 digs, tops in both categories for the Highlanders, who lost by scores of 25-10, 25-22 and 25-16.

“We played a decent second set,” Cole said, “We looked a lot better.”

The team captured some of that strong play for the afternoon match with Marian, taking it in four sets, 25-16, 25-23, 15-25 and 25-19.

“We came together as a team,” said Cole, “The girls played really well together. It was nice to watch. It was a well-rounded effort.”

The statistics bear her out: Holly Motheral had six kills, four blocks and 16 digs while Darby Emerson had 18 kills and 23 digs. Ashley Kuvshinikov made five blocks and had nine digs, while setter Meghan Phipps had 36 assists and eight digs.

“It was great to end the tournament with a win like that,” Cole said.

Motheral and Emerson earned All-Tournament honors.

The Highlanders are back in action on Friday, September 5 at Penn State-Greater Allegheny at 7 p.m.

Houghton College has deep and solid roots in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, where our teams use their commitment to excellence, both on the field-of-play and in the classroom, as a platform for their strong and unique emphasis on Sports Ministry. Their goal is to make a difference for the Kingdom on campus, in Allegany County, in the Northeast and around the world.  Houghton is one of only 13 institutions who have been hand-selected by the NAIA to serve as "Champions of Character" Program Centers, opening the door for Houghton to be a leader, both in the Northeast and nationally, in character education. Through hands-on, innovative community outreach initiatives, Houghton coaches and student-athletes are working together to change the culture of sport and to change our culture through sport.
