Men’s Soccer Drops Home Opener

Johnny Kimani passing to teammate Jonathan Brooks(Houghton, NY) – The Houghton College men’s soccer team opened the 2009 campaign with a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Lemoyne College.

The Dolphins took advantage of a soggy Burke Field early in the match, as Angelo Reina pounced on a loose ball and found the back of the net at the 4:49 mark. Reina extended to the lead to 2-0 with exactly 27 minutes gone when he took a pass from Sean Lawlor and slotted it past Highlander keeper Steve Zacchigna (East Aurora, NY/East Aurora).

The play was back and forth between the two sides in the opening minutes of the second half.  With 68 minutes remaining, Jonathan Brooks (Ottawa, Canada/Redeemer Christian) got the home team on the board when he buried a cross from teammate Johnny Kimani (Nairobi, Kenya/Rosslyn Academy) to bring the score to 2-1.

Despite a number of good chances over the final 20 minutes, however, Houghton was unable to tally another goal.

Brooks finished the game with two of the Highlanders four shots on goal, while Zacchigna recorded five saves while playing the entire match in net for the Highlanders.

Houghton College has deep and solid roots in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, where our teams use their commitment to excellence, both on the field-of-play and in the classroom, as a platform for their strong and unique emphasis on Sports Ministry. Their goal is to make a difference for the Kingdom on campus, in Allegany County, in the Northeast and around the world.  Houghton is one of only 13 institutions who have been hand-selected by the NAIA to serve as "Champions of Character" Program Centers, opening the door for Houghton to be a leader, both in the Northeast and nationally, in character education. Through hands-on, innovative community outreach initiatives, Houghton coaches and student-athletes are working together to change the culture of sport and to change our culture through sport.
