Women’s Basketball Dominates with Team Effort

Shannon Daugherty with the steal(Chili, NY)— The Houghton College women’s basketball team (6-1, 1-1) had eight players get more than 14 minutes of playing time and nine players score, using a total team effort to dismantle rival Roberts Wesleyan 70-50.

Houghton established a 10-point lead at the half thanks largely to its scorching shooting in the opening 20 minutes. The Highlanders were 15-26 from the floor and 3-4 from beyond the arc, shooting 57.7% en route to a 40-30 advantage. Defensively, Houghton held the hosts to just 36% from the floor, but 10 made free throws allowed Roberts to keep things close.

Houghton cooled off a little offensively in the second half, but picked up the intensity of the defensive end to make up for it. They stifled the Raiders time after time, allowing only seven field goals and 20 points over the final 20 minutes of play. Houghton shot 42% in the second half, and was an even 50% from both the field and the three point line in the contest.

Ashley Dupler (Jamestown, NY/Jamestown) led the way for Houghton at both ends of the floor. She had 18 points on an efficient 8-13 shooting, grabbed seven rebounds and swatted away 6 shots. Shannon Daugherty (Houghton, NY/Houghton Academy) had 10 points, six assists and four rebounds, while Leah French (Owego, NY/Owego Free Academy) chipped in with nine points, seven assists, and three boards. Stephanie Hudson (Bloomfield, NY/Bloomfield) had 12 points off the bench for the Highlanders.

Houghton will host Carlow University on Saturday at 2 pm.

Houghton College has deep and solid roots in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, where our teams use their commitment to excellence, both on the field-of-play and in the classroom, as a platform for their strong and unique emphasis on Sports Ministry. Their goal is to make a difference for the Kingdom on campus, in Allegany County, in the Northeast and around the world.  Houghton is one of only 13 institutions who have been hand-selected by the NAIA to serve as "Champions of Character" Program Centers, opening the door for Houghton to be a leader, both in the Northeast and nationally, in character education. Through hands-on, innovative community outreach initiatives, Houghton coaches and student-athletes are working together to change the culture of sport and to change our culture through sport.
