Women’s Basketball Loses Two in Michigan

(Houghton, N.Y.)— The Houghton College women’s basketball team (7-3, 2-1) traveled to Michigan for a pair of games last week, visiting Cornerstone University and #1 Davenport University. The Highlanders were unable to come away with a win on the road trip, losing to Cornerstone 60-51 and dropping a 95-61 contest against Davenport.

Cold shooting doomed the Highlanders against Cornerstone. The Highlanders were 12-34 from the floor in the first half, including a 1-15 mark from beyond the three-point line. The Golden Eagles were an even 50% from the floor in the first half, but made only one three themselves, and the Highlanders were within six points at the half.

In the second half, the Highlanders were able to find some offensive rhythm, connecting on 43.5% of their shots, and limited the Golden Eagles to 42% shooting. The improved percentages on both ends were not enough, however, as Cornerstone was able to build the lead slightly, and came away with a nine point win.

Ashley Dupler (Jamestown, NY/Jamestown) had 11 points and 11 rebounds for her third double-double of the season. Shannon Daugherty (Houghton, NY/Houghton Academy) had 10 points, five assists, and four steals for the Highlanders, while Kara Schrader (Romulus, NY/Romulus) had 10 points off the bench.

Against Davenport, turnovers plagued Houghton throughout the contest. The Panthers, ranked #1 in NAIA Division II, harassed the Highlanders into 34 turnovers in the game, the most this season.

Houghton shot 13-26 in the first half, made three three-pointers, and was 8-9 from the foul line, but Davenport still led after 20 minutes thanks in large part to shooting 25-44 from the field. In the second half, the Highlanders limited the Panthers to 30% shooting from the field, but it was not enough to mount a come back.

Dupler had her second consecutive double-double by posting 14 points and 10 rebounds in the game. Jennifer Hudson (Bloomfield, NY/Bloomfield) had 15 points on 4-6 shooting off the bench, which Leah French (Owego, NY/Owego Free Academy) had a team-high 21 points and three steals.

The Highlanders will return to action Tuesday, 1/5, when they travel to American Mideast Conference opponent Shawnee State (OH).

Houghton College has deep and solid roots in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, where our teams use their commitment to excellence, both on the field-of-play and in the classroom, as a platform for their strong and unique emphasis on Sports Ministry. Their goal is to make a difference for the Kingdom on campus, in Allegany County, in the Northeast and around the world.  Houghton is one of only 13 institutions who have been hand-selected by the NAIA to serve as "Champions of Character" Program Centers, opening the door for Houghton to be a leader, both in the Northeast and nationally, in character education. Through hands-on, innovative community outreach initiatives, Houghton coaches and student-athletes are working together to change the culture of sport and to change our culture through sport.
