Paige’s Amazing Shot Lifts Highlanders Against #12 Yellow Jackets

Devin Paige(Houghton, N.Y.)— The hot shooting Houghton Highlanders men’s team (8-9, 3-4) ended a back and forth game by hitting a 60 foot bank shot by Devin Paige (Marlboro, MD/ Grace Brethren Christian) as the buzzer sounded in a 78-76 victory over the 12th ranked Cedarville University Yellow Jackets (10-7, 2-2).

The Highlanders have shot an average of 38% from the floor this season, but today they found their stride shooting 54%, making 28-of-52 attempts. The Yellow Jackets were up to the task, however, of handling the potent Houghton offense. They too shot 54%, hitting 27-of-50 attempts. Still the Highlanders were a little bit better overall.

Leading the Highlanders was freshman Ohio native, Mark O’Brien (Seven Hills, OH/Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy) who had 25 points, 3 assists and 4 steals. O’Brien was also perfect from beyond the 3-point line making all three of his attempts. Yet again, Ryan Shay (Andover, NY/Andover) and Devin Paige put up impressive numbers. Each scored 17 points and Shay added 6 assists and 7 rebounds, including Paige’s miracle shot.

The Highlanders have a week off until they return to Ohio to face off against Ursuline University on Friday (1/22) and Notre Dame College on Saturday (1/23).

Houghton College has deep and solid roots in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, where our teams use their commitment to excellence, both on the field-of-play and in the classroom, as a platform for their strong and unique emphasis on Sports Ministry. Their goal is to make a difference for the Kingdom on campus, in Allegany County, in the Northeast and around the world.  Houghton is one of only 13 institutions who have been hand-selected by the NAIA to serve as "Champions of Character" Program Centers, opening the door for Houghton to be a leader, both in the Northeast and nationally, in character education. Through hands-on, innovative community outreach initiatives, Houghton coaches and student-athletes are working together to change the culture of sport and to change our culture through sport.
