Highlanders Fall to Falcons

(Houghton, N.Y.)— A game that had nine lead changes saw the Houghton Highlanders (11-6, 6-4) lose a hard fought battle 70-63 against the Notre Dame College Falcons (11-7, 7-3).

The first 8 minutes were controlled by the Falcons as they opened on an 18-9 run. The last 12 minutes of the half were back and forth with the Highlanders scoring 31 points and leading 40-36 at the break. The Highlanders offense was explosive hitting 16-of-29 (52%) field goal attempts in the first half. On the game they shot 25-of-62 (40%) to the Falcons 24-of-65 (37%).

The second half saw more back and forth play with the Highlanders fighting to maintain the lead until the seventh minute of the half when the Falcons had rallied to tie the game at 49. Both teams battled for the next several minutes with the game being tied three different times during that stretch. With 4 minutes left the Falcons broke a 61 all tie and played tight defense to emerge with the victory.

Jennifer Hudson (Bloomfield, NY/Bloomfield) had a notable game scoring 22 points and collecting 7 rebounds. Leah French (Owego, NY/Owego Free Academy) was an offensive threat, per usual, scoring 18 points along with 5 rebounds and 4 steals.

The Highlanders have one game remaining on this 5-game road trip. They will face Malone University on Tuesday (1/26).

Houghton College has deep and solid roots in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, where our teams use their commitment to excellence, both on the field-of-play and in the classroom, as a platform for their strong and unique emphasis on Sports Ministry. Their goal is to make a difference for the Kingdom on campus, in Allegany County, in the Northeast and around the world.  Houghton is one of only 13 institutions who have been hand-selected by the NAIA to serve as "Champions of Character" Program Centers, opening the door for Houghton to be a leader, both in the Northeast and nationally, in character education. Through hands-on, innovative community outreach initiatives, Houghton coaches and student-athletes are working together to change the culture of sport and to change our culture through sport.
