Highlanders Season Ends Against Shawnee State in AMC Tournament

(Houghton, N.Y.)— In the first round of the American Mideast Conference tournament, the #7 seed Houghton Highlanders visited the #2 seed Shawnee State University Bears. The Bears finished the regular season ranked #8 in the NAIA. The Highlanders could not handle the offensive attack of the Bears as they were defeated 73-48.

The Bears entered the game eager to take the lead and they did just that. On the shoulders of senior Whitney Williams, who scored 20 of her 23 points in the first half alone, the Bears took the lead five minutes into the game and never looked back. The Bears led the Highlanders 37-20 going into the half.

In the second half the Highlanders shot better than they did in the first, however, so did the Bears. The Highlanders shot 21-of-66 (32%) from the floor in the game to the Bears 25-of-58 (43%).

The Highlanders were led by Ashley Dupler (Jamestown, NY/Jamestown) and Leah French (Owego, NY/Owego Free Academy). Dupler finished with 13 points and 12 rebounds for her fifteenth double-double of the season. In her final game as a Highlander, Leah French had 12 points and 5 rebounds. In her career at Houghton, French accumulated a total of 1,331 points that will leave her in third place on the All-time scoring list.

With the 2009-2010 season over, the Highlanders now look ahead to next year. They are losing three important members that will be difficult replace in terms of the leadership and hard work that they brought to the program. However, several players returning next year have delivered impressive performances this season and it should be exciting to see them step up into the vacant roles.

Houghton College has deep and solid roots in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, where our teams use their commitment to excellence, both on the field-of-play and in the classroom, as a platform for their strong and unique emphasis on Sports Ministry. Their goal is to make a difference for the Kingdom on campus, in Allegany County, in the Northeast and around the world.  Houghton is one of only 13 institutions who have been hand-selected by the NAIA to serve as "Champions of Character" Program Centers, opening the door for Houghton to be a leader, both in the Northeast and nationally, in character education. Through hands-on, innovative community outreach initiatives, Houghton coaches and student-athletes are working together to change the culture of sport and to change our culture through sport.
