April 29

University of Rochester Invitational

Rochester, N.Y. – Junior Meghan Radimer qualified for NAIA Outdoor Nationals with her throw of 132’6” in javelin at the University of Rochester Invitational held Saturday, April 29.

 

This marks the third time that Radimer has qualified at the national level for the javelin event.  She joins fellow teammates Mary Gibson and Rachel Rhodes as members of the Highlander track and field team who will make an appearance at Outdoor Nationals in Fresno, Ca. on May 25-27.

 

The Highlanders will compete in their final meet of the season at Roberts University on Saturday, May 11.

 

April 21-22

AMC Championships

Cedarville, O.H. – Houghton College senior Mary Gibson was named American Mideast Conference Female Track Athlete of the Meet for the women’s teams at the AMC Track and Field Championships held at Cedarville University on April 21-22.

 

Gibson shared this award with Chelsea Shelnick, a sprinter from Tiffin University.

 

Gibson won both the 800m and 1500m races, setting new AMC meet records in each event with times of 2:14.79 and 4:37.67, respectively.  Her record-breaking times automatically qualified her for NAIA Outdoor Nationals in Fresno, Ca. on May 25-27. 

 

Gibson was also the lead-off runner for the women’s 4x400m relay team which placed 4th and set a new school record of 4:08.49.

 

Sophomore Rachel Rhodes broke the school record with her time of 15:50.36 in the 3k race walk.  She also automatically qualified for Outdoor Nationals in May.

 

The women’s team finished sixth out of nine teams with 62 total points.

 

On the men’s side, junior Joe Mason broke two school records with his throws in the discus and shot put events.  His throw of 46’10” in shot put breaks a 29-year old record formerly held by Steve Harris.

 

The men’s 4x800m relay team broke the school record with a time of 7:56.27.

 

Freshman Aaron Williams broke the school record in pole vault with a vault of 13’6”.

 

The men’s team finished eighth out of ten teams with 37 total points.

 

April 1

SUNY Brockport Invitational

Brockport, N.Y. – Houghton College juniors Joe Mason and Meghan Radimer both broke school records at the SUNY Brockport Invitational held April 1.

 

Joe Mason broke the school record in discus with a throw of 132’ 7”.  He also finished third in shot put. 

 

Meghan Radimer broke the record for the hammer toss with a throw of 125’ 3”.  She also finished first in javelin and second in shot put.

 

For the women, senior Mary Gibson finished second in the women’s 800m and third in the 1500m.  Naomi Christensen, Kim Gehl, and Jamie Mason took the fourth, sixth, and seventh places respectively in the 200-meter dash.  Sarah Whipple finished second in the 100m hurdles with a time of 16.67.

 

On the men’s side, senior Nick Ruiz finished first in the 800m with a time of 1:59.78.  Stephen Scott took second place in the 400m hurdles and fourth place in long jump.

 

March 25

Susquehanna Invitational

SUSQUEHANNA, Pa. – Mary Gibson finished first in two events to lead Houghton at the Susquehanna Invitational on Saturday.

 

Gibson qualified for nationals in the 1500m with a school record time of 4:40.78. She also provisionally qualified for the 800m with a time of 2:17.10.

 

Sarah Whipple finished second in the 100mHH, Danie Knapp finished 2nd in the 400mIH and Meghan Radimer finished 3rd in both the discus and the javelin.

 

On the men's side, Ryan Fadden finished 1st in the 800m, Joe Mason finished 4th in the shot put and the discus, and Aaron Williams finished 5th in the pole vault. Williams broke the pole vault record set in 1989 with a vault of 13' 0", while Mason broke a 30-year-old record in the discus (132' 6") and also set a new mark in the hammer throw with a toss of 134' 1".

 

March 9-11

NAIA Indoor Nationals

 

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – Houghton College senior Mary Gibson (Grosse Pointe Park, Mich. / Grosse Pointe South) ran to All-America honors in the 1000 meters and one mile run at the NAIA Indoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday, March 11.

 

Gibson finished fifth in both events, with the top-six finishers earning points and being named All-America.

 

She ran the 1000 in 2:55.34 and set a school record in the mile with a time of 5:03.25.

 

Gibson is now a four-time All-America performer, having previously earned the honor with a fourth-place finish in the outdoor 800 meters as a freshman and a third-place finish in the indoor 1000 meters as a sophomore.

 

Also competing at the national championships for the Highlanders:

February 18

Cornell University Deneault Invite

ITHACA, N.Y. – The men’s and women’s track programs closed the indoor regular season with good results at Cornell on Saturday. Several team members will now turn their attention to NAIA Nationals in March.

 

At Cornell, four women set PRs, while the men had 11 personal bests.

 

Mary Gibson broke the school record in the 400m for the second time this season with a time of 1:00.04. This is a provisional qualifying time for nationals. Gibson also ran her best time of the season in the 1000m with a time of 3:00.77. She has secured automatic times for nationals in the 800, 1000, and Mile and has a provisional time in the 400m.

 

The women's 4x400 Relay (Audrey Seldomridge, Jamie Mason, Mary Gibson, and Kim Gehl) also improved their school record with a time of 4:12.41.

 

While the men's team didn't come away with any school records or qualifying times, Nick Ruiz finished first in the 800m and Ryan Fadden finished first in the 1000m.

 

February 11

Cornell University Kane Invite

ITHACA, N.Y. – The women's 4x400 relay team of Audrey Seldomridge, Jamie Mason, Mary Gibson, and Kim Gehl took a little more time off of its school record with a run of 4:15.49 at the Cornell University Kane Invitational on Saturday.

 

Sarah Whipple also provisionally qualified for nationals in the 60m hurdles with a time of 9.65, while Nick Ruiz and Ryan Fadden both provisionally qualified in the 800 with times of 1:58.07 and 1:57.64, respectively.

 

Jamie Mason improved her pentathlon score to 2710.

 

February 4

Fredonia State

FREDONIA, N.Y. – Highlander track and field athletes broke three more school indoor records at the Fredonia State Invitational on Saturday.

 

Kim Gehl set a new mark in the 55m with a time of 7.74. Mary Gibson broke the record in the indoor 400m with a converted time of 1:00.61. The time was also a provisional qualification for nationals. And Joe Mason is three for three in shot put records as he broke his own record with a throw of 48' 5.5" to provisionally qualify for nationals.

 

January 28

Colgate University

HAMILTON, N.Y. – Joe Mason broke both school records he set a week ago, with a Weight Throw of 48' 3.5" and a Shot Put of 47' 6.25" at Colgate University.

 

Mary Gibson ran automatic qualifying times in both the Mile (5:11.37) and the 800 (2:20.70). Her mile time was also a school record.

 

Another school record set was by the women's 4x400 Relay, which consisted of Audrey Seldomridge, Kim Gehl, Jamie Mason, and Mary Gibson, with a time of 4:15.70.

 

Note: Rachel Rhodes competed independently at Findlay University in the 1 Mile Racewalk with another nationals qualifying time of 8:37.83.

 

January 21

Rochester Institute of Technology

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The 2006 indoor track season got off to a great start for the Highlanders as two athletes recorded automatic qualifying times for NAIA Nationals, another two times were good enough to qualify provisionally, and two school records were set at the RIT Invitational.
