November 13

AMC Tournament First Round

Urbana def. Houghton, 3-0

(30-26, 30-26, 30-27)

 

E. AMHERST, N.Y. – The Highlanders wrapped up their 2004 season with a 0-3 loss to Urbana University in the first round of the AMC Tournament at Daemen College.

 

Senior Kirsten Nelson finished her stellar career with 17 kills, six digs, and two blocks. Fellow senior Sarah Gunder chipped in with 25 assists, six kills, four digs, and four aces. Sophomore Hilary Black added six kills, junior Lindsey Norberg had 17 digs and three aces, and sophomore Audrey Seldomridge had five kills.

 

The Highlanders end their season at 17-18.

 

November 6

Houghton def. Carlow, 3-1

(30-28, 30-23, 26-30, 30-27)

 

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – In their second match of the day, the Highlanders defeated Carlow, 3-1, behind another huge performance by Houghton senior Kirsten Nelson.

 

Nelson recorded 32 kills, 11 digs, and five blocks to lead the Highlanders. Robin Frost and Audrey Seldomridge chipped in with 13 and 12 kills, respectively, while Stefanie Swanson recorded 23 digs on the defensive side. Sarah Gunder had 42 assists for Houghton.

 

The win evens the Highlanders’ record at 17-17 on the year and 11-7 in the AMC.

 

November 6

Houghton def. Notre Dame, 3-1

(30-16, 30-25, 24-30, 30-23)

 

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – Kirsten Nelson led Houghton with 18 kills, 10 digs, and 14 blocks in an AMC North Division win over Notre Dame College of Ohio.

 

Sarah Gunder also had a big game, recording 46 assists, eight kills, seven digs, and six aces, while Lindsey Norberg helped out defensively with 21 digs. Audrey Seldomridge chipped in with 11 kills for the Highlanders.

 

The win takes the Highlanders to 16-17 overall and 10-7 in the AMC.

 

October 30

Houghton def. Geneva, 3-1

(28-30, 30-27, 30-24, 30-26)

 

HOUGHTON, N.Y. – In the second of two matches on the day, the Highlanders rebounded from a loss to defeat Geneva College, 3-1.

 

Sarah Gunder recorded 49 assists and eight kills to lead the Highlanders, while Kirsten Nelson chipped in with 17 kills, nine digs, and two blocks. Robin Frost and Audrey Seldomridge also had big games for the Highlanders, recording 13 and 11 kills, respectively.

 

The win brings the Highlanders’ record to 15-17 on the year and 9-7 in the AMC.

 

October 30

Seton Hill def. Houghton, 3-2

(30-27, 24-30, 22-30, 30-26, 16-14)

 

HOUGHTON, N.Y. – Despite making a comeback in games two and three, the Highlanders lost in a dramatic five-game match to visiting Seton Hill University.

 

Kirsten Nelson had 19 kills, eight digs, 10 blocks, and three serving aces to lead the Highlanders. Audrey Seldomridge and Emily Kuvshinikov recorded 11 and nine kills, respectively to help out offensively. Sarah Gunder also had 43 assists, while Lindsey Norberg recorded 19 digs.

 

The loss drops the Highlanders’ record to 14-17 overall on the season and 8-7 in the AMC.

 

October 23

Houghton def. Point Park University, 3-0

(30-24, 30-10, 30-22)

 

PEPPER PIKE, Ohio – Kirsten Nelson led the Highlanders with 14 kills, five digs, and two blocks, as they defeated Point Park University, 3-0, in an AMC North Division match-up.

 

Sarah Gunder chipped in with 19 assists, while Robin Frost, Hilary Black, Johanna Wells, Teresa Rose, and Gunder all recorded three kills.

 

The win brings the Highlanders’ record to 14-16 overall and 8-6 in the AMC.

 

October 23

Houghton def. Ursuline College, 3-0

(30-14, 30-20, 30-15)

 

PEPPER PIKE, Ohio – Lindsey Norberg had a big defensive game for the Highlanders, recording 23 digs, in an AMC North Division win over Ursuline College.

 

Kirsten Nelson had 19 kills and eight digs, while Hilary Black and Robin Frost chipped in with eight and six kills, respectively.  Sarah Gunder also had 37 assists in the win.

 

The Highlanders’ record is now 13-16 on the year, and 7-6 in the AMC.

 

October 22

St. Vincent def. Houghton, 3-1

(20-30, 30-26, 30-18, 30-22)

 

HOUGHTON, N.Y. – After opening the match with a convincing first-game win, the Highlanders dropped the next three to St. Vincent in an AMC North division contest.

 

Kirsten Nelson recorded 20 kills, 10 digs, and seven blocks to lead Houghton. Sarah Gunder produced 42 assists and seven digs, while Robin Frost chipped in with six kills, five digs, and four blocks.

 

The loss drops the Highlanders to 12-16 on the year and 6-6 in the conference.

 

October 19

Daemen def. Houghton, 3-0

(30-23, 30-26, 30-27)

 

EAST AMHERST, N.Y. – Despite keeping it tight in all three games, the Highlanders couldn’t overcome a strong Daemen team, losing 3-0 Tuesday night on the road.

 

Kirsten Nelson recorded 18 kills and six digs to lead the way for the Highlanders. Sarah Gunder had 33 assists, Lindsey Norberg was credited with 12 digs, and Hilary Black chipped in with five kills for the visitors.

 

The loss drops the Highlanders’ record to 12-15 on the year and 6-5 in the AMC.

 

October 16

Houghton def. Geneva College, 3-2

(20-30, 30-20, 30-17, 28-30, 15-11)

 

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – Kirsten Nelson led the way for the Highlanders, recording 25 kills, 15 digs, and 2 blocks, in a five-game victory over host Geneva College Saturday.

 

Robin Frost and Emily Kuvshinikov chipped in with 10 and nine kills, respectively, while Lindsey Norberg recorded 34 digs, and Sarah Gunder added 55 assists.

 

The win brings the Highlanders’ record to 12-14 on the season and 6-4 in the AMC.

 

October 12

Roberts Wesleyan 3, Houghton 0

(30-27, 30-26, 30-23)

 

HOUGHTON, N.Y. – The Highlanders held leads in each game, but couldn’t secure the win, getting swept by Roberts in a key AMC North match.

 

Kirsten Nelson recorded 10 kills and four digs, Lindsey Norberg had 24 digs, Robin Frost contributed 10 kills, and Sarah Gunder chipped in with five kills, three digs, and 30 assists.

 

The loss drops the Highlanders to 11-14 overall and 5-4 in the AMC North.

 

October 9

Seton Hill def. Houghton, 3-0

(30-19, 30-27, 30-27)

 

GREENSBURG, Pa. – Despite a second great performance by senior Kirsten Nelson, the Highlanders dropped a 3-0 decision to Seton Hill University Saturday afternoon.

 

Nelson recorded 16 kills, eight digs, and five blocks for the match. Emily Kuvshinikov chipped in with nine kills for the Highlanders. Lindsey Norberg helped out defensively with 13 digs, while Sarah Gunder was credited with 30 assists in the loss.

 

The loss brings the Highlanders’ record to 11-13 on the year and 5-3 in the AMC North.

 

October 9

St. Vincent College def. Houghton, 3-1

(33-31, 30-20, 27-30, 30-23)

 

LATROBE, Pa. – Strong play by senior hitter Kirsten Nelson wasn’t enough as the Highlanders dropped a conference match to host St. Vincent College, 3-1.

 

Nelson had 23 kills, 10 digs, and six blocks for the match, while Sarah Gunder chipped in with 43 assists. Gunder also recorded seven kills and five blocks for the Highlanders. Lindsey Norberg and Laura Jarvis recorded 27 and 10 digs, respectively, to help out on the defensive end.

 

The loss drops the Highlanders’ record to 11-12 on the year and 5-2 in the AMC North.

 

October 2

Houghton def. Ursuline College, 3-0

(30-18, 30-19, 30-17)

 

HOUGHTON, N.Y. – In her final Homecoming, senior Kirsten Nelson led the way for the Highlanders, recording 15 kills and eight digs, in a 3-0 sweep of visiting Ursuline College.

 

Also helping out offensively were Emily Kuvshinikov and Robin Frost, recording 12 and seven kills, respectively. Sarah Gunder chipped in with 38 assists for the match, while Lindsey Norberg recorded 17 digs for the Highlanders.

 

The win brings the Highlanders’ record to 11-11 on the season and 5-1 in the AMC North.

 

October 2

Houghton def. Point Park University, 3-0

(30-7, 30-21, 30-22)

 

HOUGHTON, N.Y. – Sarah Gunder led the way for the Highlanders, recording seven kills and 16 assists, in a 3-0 defeat of Point Park University.

 

Kirsten Nelson chipped in with 14 kills, four digs, and three blocks, while Johanna Wells was credited for eight kills, two digs, and four serving aces.

 

The win gives the Highlanders a 10-11 record on the year, and a 4-1 mark in the AMC North.

 

September 28

Daemen def. Houghton, 3-2

(30-28, 26-30, 21-30, 30-18, 15-10)

 

HOUGHTON, N.Y. – Despite making a surge in the second and third games, the Highlanders lost a key AMC North Division match to Daemen College, 3-2, on Tuesday night.

 

After losing the first game, the Highlanders stepped up play and won two straight. After that, Daemen took over and won the last two to notch the victory.

 

Kirsten Nelson led the way for the Highlanders with 24 kills, 15 digs, and 10 blocks. Sarah Gunder also played a tremendous game, recording eight kills, seven digs, three blocks, and 42 assists. 

 

Emily Kuvshinikov chipped in with 11 kills for Houghton, while Lindsey Norberg did her part defensively, recording 16 digs.

 

The loss drops the Highlanders record to 9-11 on the year; 3-1 in AMC division play.

 

September 25

Houghton def. Ohio Dominican, 3-2

(28-30, 30-28, 31-29, 32-34, 16-14)

 

DEARBORN, Mich. – The Highlanders finished their play at the Michigan-Dearborn Tournament with a 3-2 win over Ohio Dominican Saturday.

 

Kirsten Nelson had another phenomenal game for the Highlanders, recording 26 kills, 24 digs, and 12 blocks. Sarah Gunder provided the necessary help with 51 assists and also served for four aces. Hilary Black chipped in with seven kills for the match, while Laura Jarvis and Lindsey Norberg recorded 15 and 24 digs respectively.

 

The win gave the Highlanders a 3-1 record for the tournament, and a 9-10 record overall for the year.

 

September 25

Michigan-Dearborn def. Houghton, 3-2

(26-30, 28-30, 31-29, 30-24, 15-13)

 

DEARBORN, Mich. – Despite winning the first two games, the Highlanders couldn’t quite finish the job, as they dropped the match to the host school, 3-2.

 

Senior Kirsten Nelson exploded for the Highlanders, however, recording 25 kills, 22 digs, and 10 blocks. Sarah Gunder was credited with 47 assists, while Lindsey Norberg chipped in with 35 digs. Robin Frost and Emily Kuvshinikov had 10 and 11 kills, respectively, for the Highlanders.

 

September 24

Houghton def. Huntington (Ind.), 3-0

(30-22, 31-29, 30-27)

 

DEARBORN, Mich. – In the team’s second match of the evening, Kirsten Nelson led the way for the Highlanders, recording 11 kills, 14 digs, and seven blocks. It was also the second sweep in a row for the Highlanders, as they defeated Huntington College in three straight.

 

Also providing the offense for the Highlanders were Robin Frost and Emily Kuvshinikov, recording eight and seven kills respectively.  Laura Jarvis and Lindsey Norberg also chipped in on the defensive side with 10 and 12 digs.

 

September 24

Houghton def. Central State, 3-0

(30-15, 30-27, 30-21)

 

DEARBORN, Mich. – Teresa Rose led the Highlanders with 11 kills in a 3-0 sweep of Central State Friday afternoon at the Michigan-Dearborn tournament.

 

Elizabeth Gardner recorded 25 assists, while Audrey Seldomridge chipped in with nine kills and five digs.  

 

September 21

Houghton  def. Roberts Wesleyan, 3-1

(30-27, 30-20, 19-30, 32-30)

 

N. CHILI, N.Y. – The Highlanders responded from their disappointing 0-4 weekend road trip with a key AMC North win on the road over Roberts Wesleyan on Tuesday.

 

Senior Kirsten Nelson led the way with 22 kills, 16 digs, six blocks, and two aces. Senior Sarah Gunder also had a big night, with eight kills, six digs, 41 assists, and three aces.

 

Robin Frost, Hilary Black, and Emily Kuvshinikov each recorded seven kills, Audrey Seldomridge chipped in with six kills and six digs, and Lindsey Norberg finished with 24 digs.

 

September 18

Mt. Vernon Nazarene def. Houghton, 3-0

(30-18, 30-24, 30-20)

 

MT. VERNON, OH – Senior Kirsten Nelson recorded 10 kills, eight digs, and three blocks as the Highlanders wrapped up a winless four-match weekend.

 

Senior Sarah Gunder chipped in with seven kills, seven digs, and 20 assists.

 

September 18

Malone def. Houghton, 3-0

(32-30, 30-20, 30-22)

 

MT. VERNON, OH – Senior Kirsten Nelson exploded for 15 kills and contributed eight digs, but it wasn’t enough for a Highlander victory.

 

Sarah Gunder added 25 assists and five kills, while Robin Frost finished with four kills.

 

September 17

Shawnee State def. Houghton, 3-0

(30-26, 33-31, 30-25)

 

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Despite keeping the games close, the Highlanders lost their second match of the day, this time to Shawnee State in three straight.

 

Kirsten Nelson and Audrey Seldomridge recorded 17 and 10 kills, respectively, while Lindsey Norberg was credited for 12 digs. Sarah Gunder chipped in with 26 assists in the loss for the Highlanders.

 

September 17

Ohio Dominican def. Houghton, 3-1

(30-12, 28-30, 30-19, 30-27)

 

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Highlanders dropped to 5-6 on the year with a 3-1 loss to Ohio Dominican Friday.

 

Leading the way for the Highlanders was Kirsten Nelson with 17 kills, eight digs, and seven blocks, along with three serving aces. Sarah Gunder was credited for 36 assists in the loss for Houghton.

 

Audrey Seldomridge and Emily Kuvshinikov chipped in with six kills each, while Lindsey Norberg helped out defensively with 12 digs. 

 

September 11

Houghton def. Notre Dame College (OH), 3-0

(30-23, 30-25, 33-31)

 

HOUGHTON, N.Y. – Senior setter Sarah Gunder led the way for the Highlanders with 41 assists, and added five kills and 10 digs, in an AMC North Division win over Notre Dame College of Ohio.

 

Kirsten Nelson added 14 kills, 12 digs, and 5 blocks, while Robin Frost and Hilary Black each recorded five kills. Audrey Seldomridge chipped in with seven kills, five digs, and three blocks for the Highlanders.

 

Houghton evened their record out at 5-5 on the season with the win, and 2-0 in conference play.

 

September 11

Houghton def. Carlow College, 3-0

HOUGHTON, N.Y. – Senior Kirsten Nelson led the way for the Highlanders with 13 kills, 10 digs and three blocks in a 3-0 sweep of Carlow College Saturday.

 

Lindsey Norberg chipped in with 15 digs and five serving aces, while Emily Kuvshinikov recorded six kills for Houghton. Sarah Gunder and Elizabeth Gardner tallied 16 and 13 assists, respectively.

 

The win brings the Highlanders record to 4-5 on the season, 1-0 in the AMC North Division.

 

September 4

Ohio Dominican def. Houghton, 3-2

(22-30, 36-34, 30-27, 26-30, 15-12)

 

HOUGHTON, N.Y. - The Highlanders finished 3rd in their own tournament, after dropping an exciting five-game match to Ohio Dominican Saturday afternoon. (tournament details)

 

Tournament MVP Kirsten Nelson finished the match with 26 kills, 16 digs, and eight blocks, while All-Tournament Team selection Sarah Gunder had 43 assists and eight kills.  Junior Lindsey Norberg chipped in with 20 digs, and sophomore Emily Kuvshinikov recorded nine kills for the Highlanders.

 

September 4

Houghton def. Rochester (MI), 3-0

(30-15, 30-10, 30-18)

 

HOUGHTON, N.Y. – Behind a solid team effort, the Highlanders defeated Rochester College, MI, Saturday morning.

 

Sophomore Teresa Rose led the Highlanders with 10 kills and five aces, junior Johanna Wells recorded seven kills, while senior Kirsten Nelson had eight kills and three blocks.  Sarah Gunder also recorded 13 assists and Lindsey Norberg helped out on the defensive end with eight digs.

 

September 3

Houghton def. Notre Dame (OH), 3-0

(30-27, 30-26, 30-18)

 

HOUGHTON, N.Y. – Senior Kirsten Nelson led the way for the Highlanders with 13 kills and five digs, while fellow senior Sarah Gunder had 37 kills in a win over Notre Dame College of Ohio.

 

Lindsey Norberg and Kailee Roessner recorded 22 and 10 digs, respectively, to propel the defensive effort for the Highlanders, and Hilary Black and Audrey Seldomridge recorded six kills apiece to help the offense.

 

September 3

Mt.Vernon Nazarene def. Houghton, 3-0

(30-20, 30-20, 30-24)

 

HOUGHTON, N.Y. – Eventual tournament champions Mt.Vernon Nazarene defeated the Highlanders in three straight Friday afternoon.

 

Leading the way for the Highlanders were Kirsten Nelson with 14 kills, 13 digs, and four blocks, Sarah Gunder with 27 assists and six kills, and Lindsey Norberg with 12 digs.  Laura Jarvis also chipped in with five digs.

 

August 28

California Baptist def. Houghton, 3-0

(12-30, 15-30, 16-30)

 

N. CHILI, N.Y. – The Highlanders fell to 1-3 on the season after a 0-3 loss to California Baptist University in the championship of the Roberts Wesleyan Tournament.

 

Senior Kirsten Nelson had six kills and 10 digs, sophomore Emily Kuvshinikov chipped in with six kills, and junior Lindsey Norberg and sophomore Audrey Seldomridge each had seven digs.

 

Sarah Gunder and Nelson were each named to the all-tournament team.

 

August 28

Houghton def. Daemen, 3-1

(30-26, 22-30, 30-19, 30-27)

 

N. CHILI, N.Y. – Senior Kirsten Nelson blasted 19 kills to propel Houghton to a 3-1 win over Daemen. The win put the Highlanders into the championship match of the Roberts Wesleyan Tournament.

 

Nelson added nine digs and six blocks to lead the Highlanders. Senior Sarah Gunder finished with seven kills and 37 assists, sophomore Lindsey Norberg added 21 digs, and sophomores Hilary Black and Emily Kuvshinikov chipped in with eights kills apiece. Sophomore Audrey Seldomridge added six kills and five digs.

 

August 27

California Baptist def. Houghton, 3-0

(17-30, 22-30, 11-30)

 

N. CHILI, N.Y. – California Baptist downed Houghton 3-0 in the second match of the Roberts Wesleyan Tournament.

 

Senior Kirsten Nelson led the way with eight kills, five digs, and two blocks. Senior Sarah Gunder had 18 assists and sophomore Emily Kuvshinikov added four kills for the Highlanders.

 

August 27

Roberts Wesleyan def. Houghton, 3-2

(30-24, 30-28, 26-30, 27-30, 9-15)

 

N. CHILI, N.Y. – After jumping out to a 2-0 lead, the Highlanders couldn’t put the Raiders away, losing to host Roberts in the first round of the Roberts Wesleyan Tournament.

 

Senior Kirsten Nelson finished with 25 kills, 10 digs, seven blocks, two assists, and two aces to lead the Highlanders. Senior Sarah Gunder added 10 kills and 42 assists and sophomore Emily Kuvshinikov had nine kills. Junior Lindsey Norberg chipped in with 18 digs.
