Location

Our camp is located on the beautiful campus of Houghton College in the historic Genesee River valley of western New York. The campus is just off Route 19, 65 miles southeast of Buffalo and 70 miles south of Rochester. The Southern Tier Expressway is just 15 miles to the south. (Directions to campus.)

 

Facilities

Houghton College provides quality athletic facilities, including a eight-lane Euro tan track, a large gymnasium for indoor sessions, state-of-the-art athletic training area, fully equipped weight room, a 25-meter swimming pool, and ample meeting space.

 

Campers will be housed on campus, and food will be provided by the college's outstanding food service personnel.

 

Objectives and Philosophy

Houghton College is a Christian college committed to providing a quality educational experience within a wholesome and safe environment. The camps provides technical training for all levels of runners from beginners through advanced ages entering grades 4-12.

 

STAFF

Camp staff members have been selected because of their own running abilities as collegiate and international competitors. The staff is knowledgeable about the intricacies of running and training. They have also been selected for their people skills and desire to work with youth.

 

Coach Bob Smalley (DIRECTOR)

Coach Smalley has been involved in youth sports and organized camping for the past 30 years.  He has coached six varsity sports at the high school level, and five varsity sports on the college level (cross country 20 years, track and field 12 years).  While at Houghton College, Coach Smalley’s cross country and track teams have won numerous conference championships; one regional championship; earned 13 NAIA All-American awards; gleaned 32 Academic All-American individual awards and produced eight All-Academic Teams.

 

Coach Smalley’s athletes have been responsible for his being named Conference Coach of the year 20 times and gaining national recognition as the NAIA Northeast Region Coach of the Year six times.

 

Coach Trini Rangel

Coach Rangel is in his sixth year as an assistant coach with the Houghton College track and field program. His responsibilities include recruiting, organizing preseason training sessions, and in-season work with sprinters, hurdlers, and jumpers. In his eight years at Houghton, Trini has been an instructor in the Physical Education Department, intramural sports director, and assistant coach for men's basketball. Prior to Houghton, he served as an athletic director, teacher, and coach at various levels in Colorado, Minnesota, and Washington state.

 

Coach Matt Dougherty

Coach Matt Dougherty has been successfully involved in endurance sports (running,biking,canoeing,snow shoeing,
and cross country skiing) since his early teens. He has been
a Junior Olympic All-American,a member of the U.S.A. Triathlon
Team and competitor in the 2003 World Championship in Spain, currently holds two world records for snow shoeing, and has produced five straight gold medals in the Empire State Games.
A graduate of Houghton College, Coach Dougherty returned in
2005 to serve as assistant distance coach for cross country and track as well as assistant professor of recreation. His training programs have produced impressive results as he has coached athletes to six All-American awards and three conference records.

Team Discount: There is a $25 per camper discount when three campers send in their registration deposit's in the same envelope by May 1, 2008.
