[ 2003 Stats ] 2003 Season in ReviewWhat started as a season full of question marks ended in a season full of record-setting performances as Houghton field hockey rebounded from an 8-10 record in 2002 to set a program mark for wins in a season, finishing 16-2.
Question No. 1 for head coach Donna Hornibrook was whether her young defense would be able to come together as a unit. Answer: All they did was shut out nine opponents (one off the school record) and allow just 17 goals in 18 games. Goalie Laura Kline had six shutouts and a 1.10 goals against average, while freshman keeper Erin Frederick had her only two starts in the season’s final two games and helped the Highlanders to their second postseason tournament title in the last three years.
Hornibrook’s second big question was whether her offense would have the killer instinct to finish its chances, something that was missing a year ago. Answer: With a school record 58 goals in 2003, the Highlanders proved that they had enough firepower to put teams away. Sophomore Kelly Mazzeo had a breakout year, setting a school record with 22 goals, and senior Brieanna Claybourn set the single season mark with 17 assists and tied the career assist record with 30. She also chipped in with nine goals, while fellow senior Jana Ortiz was second on the team with 11. Freshman Kristin Mazzeo had a great debut with seven goals.
No question about it, the 2003 season will go down as one of the best in Highlanders’ history. Field Hockey 2003 Schedule & Results16-2-0 Overall
